Iraq has drafted in a local comedian to star in a series of adverts designed to drum up enthusiasm for elections due next month.
The set of four TV spots, launched on Wednesday, feature a popular Iraqi comic encouraging Iraqis to think positively about their elections and ensure they are registered to vote.
In the first one the comedian, known as Udai, is talking to his much taller girlfriend who mischievously reminds him that he'd said things would get better after the elections.
Employing plenty of innuendo, Udai tells her Iraq's recent difficulties have been keeping him down but after the elections are successful he'll grow much bigger.
The adverts were shot by a well-known Iraqi actor-turned-filmmaker on behalf of Iraq's Independent Electoral Commission, which is organising the Jan. 30 poll.
In the other three adverts, Udai plays a variety of characters who find out what they need to do if they're not registered or if their registration details are incomplete.
With just 60 days left until the elections, Iraq's electoral authorities are rushing to get voters and parties registered and to ensure all arrangements are in place.
The work has been greatly complicated by violence in several parts of the country which has made it difficult to generate voter enthusiasm.
Some Sunni Arab political parties have called for the elections to be postponed for up to six months because they say a free and fair poll cannot be held in the climate of violence.
Insurgents, battling to drive U.S. forces out of the country and overturn the American-backed interim government, appear determined to disrupt the poll whenever it's held.
Where's Andy Kaufman when you need him?!?
ladies and gentlemens.... LATKA GRAVASS!!!
Heck, send in Janine Garofalo and Whoopi, and threaten to keep them on the air unless people vote. 99% turnout will result.
"Take my wives, Please!"
Too bad Rodney Dangerfield isn't around.
Baghdad Bob?
(*rimshot*)
This Udai may be funny, but no Iraqi caused me to have a heartier chuckle than Udai Hussein on his last day on earth.
I once shot a camel in my pajamas....
One hump or two?
The return of the Iraqi stock market? The reopening of Afghan golf courses? Now comedy? Contrary to the picture painted by the press, sounds like life is not only getting back to normal but better than before (not to mention schools, electricity, running water, and women in public).
I think so too. Media loves to report bad stuff even if they have to make some of it up.
Take my camel...please.
Stupid Irqais! Can't spell worth a damn.
(((I once shot a camel in my pajamas....)))
Groucho would be so proud of you.
Please to stop me if you heard this one before...
An Arab, a Syrian and a Palestinian were captured by cannibals. The chief comes to them and says, "The bad news is that now we've caught you and we're going to kill you. We will put you in a pot, cook you, eat you and then we're going to use your skins to build a canoe. The good news is that you can choose how to die."
The Arab says, "I will take the sword." The chief nods to his greatest warrior, the Arab shouts, "Allah Akbar!" and his head is lopped off.
The Syrian says, "an IED Belt for me please." The chief gives him the explosive belt, the Syrian runs into the market yelling, "Allah Akbar!" and blows himself up.
The Palestinian says, "Gimme a fork!" The chief is puzzled, but he shrugs and gives him a fork. The Palestinian takes the fork and starts jabbing himself all over--the stomach, the sides, the chest, everywhere. There is blood gushing out all over, it's horrible. The chief is appalled and asks, "AHMED! what are you doing?"
And the Palestinian responds, "So much for your canoe you stupid cannibal!
