When Tom Brokaw signs off his last NBC ``Nightly News'' program tonight (at 6:30 on WHDH, Ch. 7), it will mark the end of an era on network television.
Since 1982, Brokaw, 64, has been the anchor and managing editor of what is now commercial television's most popular evening news program.
Brokaw, along with Dan Rather at CBS (who announced his March retirement last week) and ABC's Peter Jennings, defined the medium's news operations for two decades, a remarkable run in a transitory business.
But it's a different broadcast world now, and Brokaw seemed to sense that.
He chose to walk out of the studio rather than wait for a time when he might be forced to leave.
These days, the three anchormen are only slightly older than their average viewers in a youth-driven ad economy. Millions who grew up watching them are now too busy at 6:30 p.m. to bother with Brokaw or Rather or Jennings.
They don't have to. They can tune in CNN, MSNBC or the Fox News Channel whenever they want.
Brokaw has said many times that he doesn't regret his decision to leave ``Nightly News.'' He's looking forward to personal time and the opportunity to work on documentaries for NBC News.
He is reportedly contracted to provide NBC with three documentaries a year and recently said he could have the first one-hour special ready by next spring.
But first he has to decide how to end tonight's broadcast, his last program as a network news anchor.
He doesn't believe he needs to say much.
``It won't be at great length,'' he said. ``It won't be an opus of some kind.''
"See ya".
at least he is leaving before he embarrased himself i.e. Rather....
What is just me, or did he always seems drunk?
That's just the normal befuddlement of the liberal mind trying to comprehend what it's supposed to read from the teleprompter.
Old Media is boring and useless.
Who is Tom Brokaw? Oh wait...he's the guy that broadcast the forged letters, isn't he?
Good riddance.
The behaviour was an attempt, I believe, at undermining Bush's connection with the audience. I did NOT see Brokenjaw do this with any of the other candidates on the stage.
(Yawn!)...Don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out......
Buh-bye, Tommie "The Commie" Brokejaw scumbag; good riddance!
He is more full of himself than a really hungry cannibal.
YAWN.....
