TORONTO, Nov. 29 /PRNewswire/ - A new public opinion poll in advance of President Bush's visit to Canada shows that 71% of Canadians believe the U.S. is our closest friend and 67% believe that anti-American statements will only hurt our ability to resolve disputes with the Americans on trade issues.
The survey of 1,000 Canadians was conducted by GPC Public Affairs (www.gpc.ca) on November 23-24, 2004 and has a margin of error of +/-3.1%, 19 times out of 20. The study was commissioned by the Friends of America (www.friendsofamerica.ca), a non-profit organization funded by ordinary Canadians that promotes our close relationship with the U.S. and speaks up against the loud anti-American minority who purport to speak for all Canadians.
Highlights of the survey include:
- 71% identify the United States as Canada's closest friend;
- 67% agree that anti-American statements hurt our ability to resolve disputes with the Americans;
- 73% believe opposing the policies of President Bush is not the same as being anti-American;
- Notwithstanding recent trade disputes and media attention, a full 60% of Canadians say they have positive feelings about the U.S., with another 25% citing "somewhat positive" feelings
- Only 15% - or roughly 1/10 Canadians cite negative attitudes towards the U.S.
- 37% of Canadians aged 18-35 believe "it's cool these days to dislike Americans."
"It's important to highlight the warm and personal friendship we have with our American neighbors," said Richard Diamond, President and Co-Founder of Friends of America. "With such a clear majority of Canadians sharing a positive view of the U.S., it's important we not let a very vocal minority of anti-American and anti-Bush agitators hijack the news agenda around the President's visit to Canada."
"We don't always agree with the Americans and have some specific trade issues to resolve with them, but this survey clearly shows that we can disagree with certain policies without being anti-American," added Diamond.
Full results of the study of Canadian attitudes can be found at www.friendsofamerica.ca or www.gpc.ca .
Canadians suffer from multiple personality disorder. Either way, they aren't our friends. The anti-American rhetoric continues with those people. They are just finding out we Americans haven't taken too kindly to discovering their not-so-nice nature.
they are probably afraid Bush will invade or something
I'm not sure whether I buy these poll numbers.
They are so stupid.
Biased poll I think.
The organization behind it seems to mean well though.
They also want to make-nice so they can continue to migrate here to earn more money and have better lives. See http://www.canadasbraindrain.ca/home1.html
This is the slutty girl syndrome. Like you, hate you, like you hate you...depending on what you have to offer at any moment.
I'm fed up with polls myself, but I do think that the U.S.-Canada relationship was poisoned by Chretien. It's good to see Martin getting off on the right foot. Hopefully the Canadians will be fighting along side of us soon.
I don't even like Pres Bush going to Canada after the scenarios in SA.
I am a Canadian and a conservative and a pro-American and a huge supporter of President Bush. But it is clear from your post that you hate me because I am Canadian. I guess that means all Americans hate me ....your a Moron!
The real problem is both Canadians and Americans like you bushfamfan that spread this wide brush of hatred. I see you in the same boat as the lefties that are anti-American -morons!
If I wasn't in a rush I would tell you what I really think.............LOL
It's really very much like in the US. The PEOPLE are conservative, but the liberal elite are running the country and setting the tone.
Two words: Mad Cow
The last thing the Canadians need is for U.S. meat inspectors
to find another diseased Canadian bovine.
So it's butt-kissin' time, eh?
Could this poll be by the same folks who did the exit poll election day?
How convienient...- Church lady(tapping fingers)
- 73% believe opposing the policies of President Bush is not the same as being anti-American;
LOL!!!
Do they happen to understand that AMERICANS gave this man a mandate, so it would seem reasonable to assume that we agree with the Prez's policies more than not?
It is fine to have a philosophical disagreement. It is fine to choose an alternate policy that the country may find more beneficial. When our President is labeled Hitler, and Parrish stomps a replica of him, well, a line is crossed.
The President represents this nation. If you hate our elected representative, that is a stated reflection of how you feel about our judgement and values.
This is similiar to the same spouted nonsense the Dems use to say they support our troops, then leap at opportunity to pull funding and accuse them of war crimes. Sorry, Canada, guess the majority of this country is not yet so "nuanced" we find this position reassuring.
Understand I know there are conservative Canadians fighting to change this attitude and wish them luck. This is why I suggest fleeing Libs head to France, out of respect for their struggle. But the majority influencing current canadian politics needs a reality check.
I have spent a bunch of time in Canada (espcially BC), and find the people warm and friendly, and unlike so much of the US, very courteous.
Now if CA could get rid of the frogs and send Quebec out to sea, I would be ready to move to CA, as it is a great country.
