Actually I always subscribed to the "Hillary is the brains of the operation" theory of the duo. Now Bill also had some pretty damn good political operatives, Carvelle and Morris. His team did everything they could and got Kerry within spitting distance after the Dukakis/Kennedy guys almost killed him with their idiotic convention and lack of response on Swift Boats.

So I credit the brain trust with some seriously good political skills (at the politics as marketing level). And I think Hillary is totally able to look at trends, 04 results, internal surveys and make the logical jump that she can't win. SHE CAN'T WIN. Unlike Billy Bob, she is smart enough to skip it if she really believes that. We shall see.
