WACO, Texas -- At one time, the debate over Darwin's theory existed as a cartoon in the modern imagination. Thanks to popular portrayals of the Scopes Trial, secularists regularly reviewed the happy image of Clarence Darrow goading William Jennings Bryan into agreeing to be examined as an expert witness on the Bible and then taking him apart on the stand.

There is nothing like creationism vs. evolution thread to bring out the best in people.

The publication of his book, Darwin on Trial, now appears to have marked a new milestone in the debate over origins. I arrived at this conclusion when I read the book ten years ago. Johnson will hold a prominent place in the history of the debate regarding human origins 100 years from now, in much the same way that Darwin does now.

I can name one transitional species: Archaeopteryx
False! The whole reason Archaeopteryx was considered a transitional species was because of the lack a bony sternum. Never mind that we had no full specimens of Archaeopteryx. Well, guess what? A specimen was found, fully intact at a site in Germany, and guess what else, it was found WITH a SOLID bony sternum, fully capable of power flight!!!! As in one of my last posts, we now have bird fossils pre-dating Archaeopteryx.

Creationists are desperate people clinging to a fantasy.
Perhaps, but you could say that about everyone on earth.

You think that Homo sapiens are the end of the line? That we are the goal?

What you call yourself and what you are remain to distinctly different things. That's the way I feel about Christians. Most them are what they claim to be, but many of them don't practice what they preach.

"As a right-wing conservative, I am startled to see how dumb some of you guys are. Do you really think that some "intelligent designer" would have made such a botch out of this world? " You make the mistake of assuming that "intelligent design" by a perfect creator must result in a perfect world. Jewish and Christian theology both very clearly posit that this is a corrupted and fallen world, and FAR from perfect.

I respect everyone's right to believe what you want about the origins of life. However, I also reserve the right to disagree with you and to rely on my own interpretations of what I see as fact and what I see as fantasy. Later.

However, belief in the Christian God is mutually exclusive to evolutionary theory.Ridiculous. Or perhaps you can show me where in the bible it says we must accept everything it says as literal?

For the millionth time then, why are there still apes?I'm sure some wise soul has already pointed this out, but once all animalistic voters evolve into Republicans, then for the Dem party to still exist, they'll need a pool to work from...

How about the "carbon dating" that showed the sedimentary layer at the bottom of the Grand Canyon to be younger than that at the top?
Tis true. Before I answer, You have a citation for that?

"belief in the Christian God is mutually exclusive to evolutionary theory."
The Pope believes, and has publicly stated, otherwise.
