A ringing cell phone landed a 17-year-old Patchogue girl facing drug charges in a jail cell this week after an angry district court judge sentenced her to 21 days for contempt.

Mariela Acevedo of 21 Hammond St. incurred the wrath of District Court Judge Salvatore Alamia on Tuesday. As she awaited her hearing, an electronic device went off in Alamia's Central Islip courtroom and he warned everyone to shut off all cell phones and pagers or face contempt charges.

"If you don't know how to shut it off, go outside and introduce it to the heel of your shoe, he said according to a transcript.

When Acevedo's phone subsequently sounded, Alamia called the teenager forward and asked, "Did you think I was playing with you?"

What's really scary is all the people on here that don't know how to turn off a cell phone.

Yupper. Makes ya wonder if they can figure out how to get out of bed in the morning. They belong over at DU.

the teenager stated "I THOUGHT I DID TURN IT OFF" and the judge said, "I know you've been playing with it all morning, sayonara.".

This little twit most probably has had 10 or 11 years in our magnificent public education system and has never had it even suggested to her that her arrogance might have consequences.

Welcome to the real world, honey.

BTW, what she actually received was one night in the cooler.

It is that judge that should be thrown in jail. No one should send a 21-year old woman to go shack up with the bull-daggers for 21 days, for forgetting her cell phone was on.

This has nothing to do with anything. The individual told the judge she thought she had turned her cell phone off. For crying out loud.

As a sub, I look at students while they talk out of turn in class and call them on it. At least half will look me in the eye and tell me that they weren't talking. My reply, "You get into double trouble when you lie to me. I was watching you. Now, were you talking?" Then they fess up. Moral of story: Don't believe all people who claim innocence.

Ok, now I see what's got you so upset: Life isn't fair.

Bull sh*t.

Don't give me this life isn't fair claptrap.

The government, including their tax paid agents are forcing us to pay for millions in this country that are here illegally, BREAKING THE LAW. To the point where this epic lawlessness is shutting down our hospitals, choking off our schools, and social services.

Yet if I don't pay for this government sponsored titanic lawlessness they put us in jail.

But you want the citizens to abide by the letter of the law?

Spit!

21 days for contempt???

Imagine if someone actually commits a crime?! "Off with her head!"

I always find it a bit pompous of the courts when we have a first amendment that gives us the right to hold our government in contempt but the legal trade union believes so much as any disrespectful comment or act towards the court should be met with a harsh punishment.

A simple fine of $25 or the taking of the phone until the following day would suffice.

BTW, have a cell phone ring at a Microsoft meeting and the person sings a show tune.

"It's his courtroom."

No it is not! It is OUR courtroom! He just gets the privilege of having the authority to operate it.

Hey Joe. How old are you?

Old enough to know we are being had.

"One went off, and the judge gave a warning for everyone to follow (what were probably) the posted rules for the court room. "

Again, it was an accident in the same manner as passing wind. If you are going to convict people for cellphone ringers you would also have to start convicting the chronically flatulent.

The punishment she recieved should have been solely limited to the verdict (45 days) the judge rendered on that said drug charge. The additional 21 days was out of context of the crime itself.

The 45 days was limited to the drug charge, and that sentence came the following day.

You're correct, the 21 days was outside of the context of the crime. It was 21 days for contempt, a totally separate matter.

From looking at this thread, it's obvious that you and a few others don't understand anything at all about the seriousness of courtroom decorum and rules. I bet a hundred bucks the judge conveyed the cellphone warning with unmistakable clarity; and I wouldn't be surprised to learn that this girl rolled her eyes and purposefully defied him. I'd love to hear an eyewitness account.

PS: If you want to see "jerks" who abuse their power, how about liberal activists who create legislation from thin air with their rulings.

Why? Because he followed through on discipline? Maybe if someone had been a little more caring with this young woman sooner she might not be in his courtroom to begin with.

Republican, Democrat, Libertarian, Green party, little green men from mars.......doesn't matter. The Judge told everyone to turn off their cell phones and they all did but her.

No one should send a 17 YEAR OLD GIRL to go shack up with the bull-daggers for 21 days,
And, more than likely, no one did. 17 year olds go to Juvie. Not that there aren't all sorts of interesting people there, but it is somewhat safer than, say, Rikers.

I'm thinking it's important that this was a news story, and we don't know what they left out. And one thing they could have left out was the young lady's demeanor before the cell phone rang. The amount of open contempt I have seen SOME juveniles show in court is, to me, astonishing. Last week a pair of thugs and thier groupies persisted in whispering and giggling despite repeated warnings. They were begging to be sent up for contempt.

Yeah, there are arrogant judges. But it's also true that what goes on in court is important, and that the judges generally have an unbelievable number of cases to plow through. And in Juvie, where the judges with whom I come in contact really DO care about the kids, their families, and their outcomes, the emotional energy is pretty high. Juvie is the scariest court in our district, because juveniles aren't mature enough to know they're not going to get away with assault, and because the issues are emotionally deep issues.

21 days MIGHT be excessive, but I wouldn't say it was for shure until I knew the rest of what went on that day.

Get a clue. She actually spent NO additional time in jail for this offense. Read the full story. Being informed before forming an opinion is a good thing.
