Parents grew up in the 1950s and 1960s. The riot that took place at my aunt's high school was in 1970, at the height of black power.

"Errh, I thought that was circa 1959-1968."

Depends on what part of the country, and what stage of integration.

Sol C Johnson High School, located in the Sandfly, GA community (home of Clarence Thomas), was delegated to receiving busing of white students from the Wilmington Island, Tybee Beach, Whitmarsh Island other neighborhoods along Highway 80. This happened in late 1970.

These were relatively affluent neighborhoods in which the numbers of white students radically changed the overall contrast at what was considered to be a relatively poor, intercity school.

Needless to say, the black student population viewed this unfavorably, and protested with pipes, pipe-wrenches, boots, bottles, chains and fists. Relatively few firearms were discovered on a mandatory inspection of all vehicles parked on campus.

I have seen a vice-principle literally kicked all the way from where the action was, back to his office. He was never able to get more mobile than hands and knees. The animosity went away far quicker than anyone really ever expected it to, and the major riots were less than 3 in number if my memory serves me right.

I quickly learned the value of the diversity of friends. I had recently returned from a 2 year stay in Jamaica, WI, and was a bit more tolerant than most (possibly a little more scared). During the heat of the worst of the fighting, 2 black fellow band members literally carried me off campus, saying "You don't need to be here". That, I never will forget.
