Fish and chip shops across the nation have rallied against calls by barmy animal rights activists to ban one of Britain's favourite dishes.
Vegetarian group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has traditionally campaigned against people wearing fur coats or the killing of farmyard animals.
Now it wants fish suppers taken off the menu because it says the tasty underwater creatures are "intelligent" and feel pain when caught.
PETA's Dawn Carr said: "We are not pulling any punches on this one.
"We don't think people should eat fish at all and if that means they do not eat fish and chips then so be it.
She added: "People should go on a fishing boat and see the amount of suffering a fish goes through when it is caught.
"It's horrific their eyes pop out and their stomachs burst because of the pressure."

Graybeard, there better be milk in that beer can :)
I TALK to some of my plants occasionally....especially if they're being especially good (like my 50 year old Christmas Cactus of my great grandmother's that is having "babies (flowers) right now....<:)
Hey PETA,
Remember those scantily clad (or unclad) bimbos you had in cages to protest something I can't be bothered to remember? Tell them I would like to have them investigate my codpiece. They might be able to discern whether my cod has feelings.
I didn't even know they made fish substitutes, probably tastes like chicken. : )
My freezer is stocked with red salmon, king salmon and halibut that I personally killed in Alaska this summer.
I love the Old Monk and used to hang out with Peter and Furgel at the Dubliner for years. Man the good 'ol days.
It IS milk.
Yeah, that's the ticket.....milk.
PETA member sees it as :
My freezer is stocked with red salmon, king salmon and halibut that I personally killed murdered in Alaska this summer.
Next you will probably murder your grass on your front yard. : )
Gee, you're making me hungry, I absolutely love salmon
I love to fish, and I love to eat fish more than I love to fish. But I have to tell you this story...
In the mid-70's I was visiting a Buddhist temple on the north shore of Oahu, Hawaii. A common practice by visitors was to buy crackers and feed them to the beautiful, multi-colored fish called Koi (Japanese Carp). While I was feeding the fish, the caretaker, an old Japanese man, approached me and said, "Fish are very smart". Without waiting for a response he broke off a piece of my cracker, looked at a fish located in the outer part of the mass of hungry fish, and said, "Charlie!" Immediately a fish literally crawled over the top of the other fish to the man, and opened his mouth. The man place the cracker into the fish's mouth, and said nonchalantly, "That's Charlie". It was truly magical. I thought I was in a parallel universe.
For years the scraggly Arbor Vitae beside my house has just goofed off and grown not a bit.
Last March, I said [to no one in particular though within earshot" of the shrub] "That's it. I'm calling Dad and telling him to pull this ratty thing out by the roots".
It grew a full foot this summer and has bushed out to glorious dimensions.
I don't know if "talking to them" does anything but threatening their lives apparently does...:)
I have a large Comet in my backyard pond named "Moe".
If you call to him/her/who knows for sure, he/she/it appears and will take flakes from your fingers.
The only problem is that Moe is greedy and nips.
[as in "gimme Moe!" "gimme Moe"]....;))
Now I want some fish and chips, and I don't know of any good places around here. GRRR, stupid PETA people giving cravings that I can't satisfy for a long time.
LOL.
wonder what they think of RAT poison
That's nuthin. The cow, the goat, the lamb bred by the kids in the farm programs are very expressive. What kid doesn't like a little piglet? And yet the farm programs exist to teach the kids about raising cattle for slaughter. Some don't survive that experience, and join PETA (I guess). I can understand wishing to avoid the slaughterhouse method, the assembly-line butchery and waste. Ideally, an animal is killed and most every bit eaten or otherwise used. That's difficult to do in the centralized assembly-line ship and delivery channels that were created in the 19th century. Entire animals are killed, literally to no purpose. Many are killed to no purpose. But to argue that they should never be killed is immoral. Animals are NOT 'people too'. They specifically are not. And it may be a moral gesture to be a vegetarian. I don't doubt that. But for a vegetarian to try and turn the reality of the world upside down is a lie, is wrong, and is immoral. And that describes PETA. They are not doing the Lord's work.
Ok, no more fish. I'll just have to go back to eating veal instead.
Oh, and a point about fishing: we're not doing anything to the fish that they aren't doing to each other! When one hits a bait on a hook, what do you think he's trying to do - save it from drowning?
