People who think George Bush is the stupid party ought to visit a mirror

Nov. 17, 2004

President George Bush is officially to visit Canada on November 30th. This is really swift. After the frostiness of the last four years between Canada and the U.S. on a number of issues, but particularly on Canada's unwillingness to join the war to depose Saddam Hussein, a visit scheduled so quickly must be a sign that both our countries see some need to warm up the relationship.

We do see some things differently than the Americans, and thank heavens that we do. There wouldn't be much point to being Americans or Canadians if we didn't. And there should be no hesitation, no deference, no finessing, no turning down the volume when we have a point to make to them. Canada can tell the Americans they're wrong anytime it wants to, loudly, clearly, forcefully, and without qualification. And they can do exactly the same with us. Countries, like adults, have the privilege, which is often the responsibility, to make differences known vividly and without compunction.

Unfortunately, and I think it's more on our side of the border than theirs, there are a few prominent types who prefer a more kindergarten approach to U.S./Canada relations. Pat Buchanan, for example, the U.S. commentator sneered at Canada as Canuckistan. No big deal. Buchanan is not elected to anything.

A lot of private Canadians have said a lot worse about U.S. and a whole lot about George Bush. But there's one Canadian who is not a private citizen, she's an MP who's almost worked up a whole vaudeville act built on strands of anti-Americanism and condescending or straight up insults either to the Americans themselves, "Damn Americans, I hate those bastards, coalition of the idiots," or to their president and head of state.

She doesn't hold Mr. Bush in any esteem whatsoever and seems to think it's part of her function as an MP to seek out increasingly ridiculous venues, it used to be the Mike Bullard show, to air her meagre tiny distempers. Now on the eve of the President's visit, Miss Parrish has obliged "22 Minutes" by doing a little number on a George Bush doll.

Pure enlightenment. Miss Parrish occasionally makes the claim that she's extending the debate, that she's standing up to the Americans and all sorts of noble stuff about the right to free speech. I don't know. "Idiots, damn Americans, I hate those bastards," that "22 Minutes" jig, these are words and actions that belong to the classroom show-off, the needy clown, attention getting by means of insult and crude display. They're nothing but "Look at me insulting George Bush and sticking it to the Yanks." It's juvenile, it's smug, and it's vulgar. It will amuse only very limited minds, and it will offend a great number of Americans, even those who do not support George Bush but who don't like to see their head of state derided by second rate comments and third rate stunts by one of our members of Parliament.

I don't want to see her muscled. Far from it. Let her continue to air her angry heart's content. The deeper embarrassment here is to herself, however long the realization is in coming. And one last note: A lot of people who think George Bush is the stupid party ought to visit a mirror. For "The National," I'm Rex Murphy.

That would have been like the US telling the UK in WWII, that US forces would ONLY be sent to Italy.

He's a Newfie and doesn't dance around the issue. This is one reason why I like what he has to say.

Newfies are damned good people:

"On 9/11 I was on a flight bound for Chicago. We had just entered Canadian airspace when the captain announced that US airspace had been closed. Not knowing what had happened we thought it was a joke and were laughing that "at this very time a few hundred planes must be bound for the US, like they would shut down US airspace. Where will they all land - on oil platforms?". Our laughter froze when we were forced to land in Gander, Newfoundland. We sat on the tarmac for six hours watching one plane after another land. During that time we learned what had happened. After we got to deplane we were put onto school buses and brought to a bunch of villages in central Newfoundland. What happened then still remains incredible to me. Not in my entire life have I encountered such warm and welcoming people. Our hosts slept in a tent trailer in the yard so that we could have their house. In order to alleviate our pain they took us hunting and fishing, put on BBQs and held all-night parties in our honour. Similar things happened to all other passengers on our flight. I think we couldn't ask for a better neighbour. ------------------------------------------------------------

I completely agree with you.
GWB needs to standby what he said.

We will see what he does with Iran.

Canada turning their back on us will not ever be forgotten.
The next time they need something form us they can frinky forget about it.

That is a bunch of bull and you know it.
The fact is that if it had been Canada that were attacked on 9-11, the US would have gone to Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, you name it.
We would have stood shoulder to shoulder with you. Much like Britain has done with us.

Canada bowed under pressure. They failed a dear friend in their darkest hour. Now, while our Marines are killing the very same terrorists who attack us on 9-11 in Iraq, you want to talk about how important it is to have civil discourse? How important it is to be able to disagree on things?

Let me ask you a question. Do you have any brothers?
If your brother gets into a fight and ends-up needing your help, do you stand up for him or do you step aside?

This is the way that many of us Americans see Canada now.
What can I say.
I am not going to pull any punches when it come to our troops protecting our liberty.
There is no sugar-coating the facts.

Don't hold back, t-1000, for heaven's sake say what you mean! You really should remember that not ALL Canadians are socialist/communist hacks, that there is a fairly large minority of conservatives who are tirelessly trying to wake their idiotic brethren up to reality. I hate the Canadian left as much as the American left, but I'm not going to lump the whole country into the same group. You are currently insulting every Canadian FReeper right now, for example. I hope you can see how this is wrong, and downright rude.

Rex Murphy is just one of many Canadians who fight the good fight. He's a Newfoundlander who doesn't care what others think. He rarely misses the mark.

Two of the most memorable Rex Murphy news analysis I remember were his analysis of what Bill Clinton should have siad regarding the whole Monica-impeachment thing to rally the County and move forward Click for what Rex would have had Clinton say

and then his analysis of what George Bush said to Congress after 9/11 in the delcaration of war on terroristm.

Click here for Rex's analysis of Bush speech to congress

No one can accuse him of being just a pretty face, he is has some penetrating insight.

I lived in Vancouver for a year in the 70's. I worked with a group that came from all over Canada. At that time (it may still be true) about 90% of Canadians lived within 100 mi. of the US border.

Their politics pretty much reflected the ones of the Americans just to the South - the East and West, and the ones near the Great Lakes were way Liberal, and the mid-country was Conservative.
But in Canada, the numbers who lived in the Liberal areas far out-numbered the ones in the central part. In America, our population totals are more evenly divided.

I expect that I'd still feel the same way about Canadians - I agree with the Conservatives and dislike the fact that the Liberals have larger numbers.

Do you realize that you are saying the same things about all of them, as this woman and some others are saying about us and our President? Well, you are! I'm not a Canadian, but I have a cousin that lives there. And besides that, there are a number of fine Canadian people; and many of them are quite conservative! Maybe some people on our side need to look in a mirror?

Look, it is unfortunate that a much more leftist bunch is in charge in Canada. However, it seems terribly unfair, and wrong to paint all of them with the same tar-brush! I'm sure not all of them voted for them; but that's what they got, and now they have to deal with it all, and endure it.

Those are the ones I feel for; and I hope as soon as they are able, they'll be able to bring in a much more balanced, hopefully more moderate, if not conservative, government! That goes the same for France, Germany, and Spain!
