The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

"We should have secured the Mexican border."

That could be the pitiful lament we hear from negligent U.S. officials if Al Qaeda pulls off an attack on the United States using weapons of mass destruction smuggled across our southern frontier.

Were that horrendous event to happen, leaders in the administration and Congress would be justly hit with the same question that was perhaps unjustly cast at them and their predecessors after the unprecedented Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks: Why didn't they connect the dots?

Someone needs to make Zarqawi room temperature.

We all need to maintain our vigilance. We know Zarqawi and his ilk would love to pull off a major attack during the CHRISTmas season. The reports of mall security being trained to spot suicide bombers does provide a bit of reassurance, but in the end, we must accept the fact that we are responsible for our own safety and security.

Always know where the nearest exit. Always be aware of who and what are in your proximity. If you see anyone acting strangely or something/someone that just doesn't fit, remove yourself from the area and alert the proper authorities.

>> Oh dear, you have a project on your hands, huh? <<

I sure do. Right now, the place has a concrete floor that gets mighty chilly in the mornings. There is no kitchen so I'm getting a small fridge and microwave. Going to be dinning off paper plates and plastic forks. LOL!

The place has a full size washer and dryer in a huge full bathroom. There's plenty of parking. Great neighbors. No HOA. It's in the country and close to where I hunt.

Don't think too many folks could live like this, but it suits me perfectly.

Interesting article, IMO. Insight on what our troops and syops are up against in the Pakistan/Afghanistan region.

Hunt for bin Laden is stymied in the wilds of Pakistan
By James Risen and David Rohde The New York Times
Tuesday, December 14, 2004

Hunting for Osama bin Laden, the CIA established a series of small, covert bases in the rugged mountain frontier of northwest Pakistan in late 2003. Bin Laden, the terrorist leader, was being sheltered there by local tribesmen and foreign militants, the agency had concluded, and he controlled a group of handpicked operatives dedicated to attacking the United States.

But since the bases opened, the CIA officers stationed there have been strictly supervised by Pakistani officials, who have limited their ability to operate and have escorted them wherever they travel in the Pakistani border region. As a result, it has been virtually impossible for the Americans to gather intelligence effectively, say several officials who would speak only anonymously.

In line with the above article is this excerpt from the current (12/04) issue of National Geographic. I don't have a link, just the magazine in front of me, from which I'm typing. The article is titled "Tracking the ghost of bin Laden in the land of the Pashtun".

Even more forbidding than rocks and snow are the locals, a bewildering array of tribes and clans known collectively as the Pashtun, who number more than 25 million and are sometimes referred to as the Pakhtun, or Pathan. Living on both sides of the border, the Pashtun share a language (Pashtu), a love of guns and jokes, a deep suspicion of outsiders, a passion for the green chewing tobacco called naswar, and belief in a strict and ancient code of honor, called Pashtunwali. One tenet of this code - nanawateh, or sanctuary - is particularly vexing to bin Laden's hunters. It means that every Pashtun is duty bound to help anyone who comes knocking at his door seeking refuge, even if it's his worst enenmy. A Pashtun is expected to give his life defending a guest, and many have done so.

I recall a conversation with the urbane Col. Mohammad Yahya Effendi, one of the Pakistani spymasters who ran the Afghan rebels, or majahideen, during the Soviet war in the 1980's. The Pashtun "can act with nobility and yet be absolute rascals," Effendi told me. "They'll do all sorts of treacherous things - even betray their fathers. But they're bonkers when it comes to giving sanctuary. It's like a sacred mission."

Anyone who hands bin Laden over to the Americans might be 25 million dollars richer in reward money, explained Effendi, but the digrace would hang over this person, along with his family, clan, and tribe, for many generations. "Osama's a major Islamic hero," he added. "Whoever betrays him, why, his life wouldn't be worth an onion."

Military signs deal to develop anti-anthrax inhaler
Stephen Thorne Canadian Press
Monday, December 13, 2004

OTTAWA (CP) - Defence officials have signed a $2.9-million deal with a U.S. firm to develop an anti-anthrax inhaler that could be available for civilian as well as military use.

Aradigm Corp. of California will spend the next few years developing and testing a puffer to counter the effects of anthrax and other biological warfare agents. The inhaler, conceived by Defence Department researchers, will contain the powerful antibiotic ciproflaxacin. "The initial target population was military use," said Maj. Don Van Loon, a bio-science officer.

Story update:

Kelly 'could not have died' from knife wound, paramedics claim

The Scotsman
Monday, Dec. 13, 2004
DAN MCDOUGALL

Key points
• Paramedics believe wounds unlikely as cause of death due to lack of blood
• Medical situation complicated by opiate drugs and blood condition in victim
• Thames Valley Police have no intention of re-opening the case

Key quote I just think it is incredibly unlikely that he died from the wrist wound we saw. There just wasn’t a lot of blood. When someone cuts an artery, whether accidentally or intentionally, the blood pumps everywhere." - VANESSA HUNT, PARAMEDIC

Story in full POLICE have rejected calls to re-open the inquiry into the death of Dr David Kelly, the government weapons expert, after two paramedics who found him at the scene of his death said he could not have died from self-inflicted knife wounds

"German report: Attack bigger than 9/11 planned

Methinks that al-Zarqwai has his hands full trying to keep from getting killed in Iraq and no ability to go global and muster the resouces and manpower he is desprately using up in Iraq for an attack bigger than 911.

Sickening that we are broadcasting Hizbollah in the US. The FCC is silently tolerant.

Complacency (FCC/Immigration Department/Law Enforcement regarding ME types photographing industrial, water source and nuclear facilities, and Airline Security with their refusal to profile ME types) is a state of satisfaction accompanied by unawareness of actual dangers or deficiencies. While the high comfort level that results from complacency is reassuring, it is also dangerous in that the majority of us are not prepared for terrorist acts. Terrorists thrive on this type of ignorance, depending on it to competently carry out their acts of violence.

...and that is the problem, if this article correctly identifies the situation.
