China to crush any "Taiwan independence" attempts at all costs
A central government spokesman warned Wednesday that China would resolutely crush any "Taiwan independence" attempts at all costs if the Taiwan authorities try to create any major splittist incidents through so-called "Constitutional reform".
"If Chen Shui-bian dares to use this ('Constitutional reform') to create any major incidents aimed at 'Taiwan independence', we will resolutely and completely crush such splittist attempts at all costs," said Li Weiyi, spokesman for the Taiwan Affairs Office under the State Council, China's cabinet, at a press briefing Wednesday in Beijing.
Asked to comment on Taiwan leader Chen Shui-bian's recent remarks which claimed that Taiwan was a sovereign state and needed a fresh constitution, the spokesman said: "This has once again exposed Chen's true face of seeking 'Taiwan independence'."
"In promoting the so-called 'Constitutional reform', Chen is actually seeking to separate Taiwan from China," said Li.
He said Taiwan is never a sovereign state. It is proved by all historical facts and laws again and again that and it is widely recognized by the international community that Taiwan is an integral part of the Chinese territory.

"The rise of RMB interest rate will benefit the sound development of its national economy, which will provide a better environment for Taiwan-invested enterprises," said Li Weiyi.
He pointed out that the adjusting of interest rate slightly raised financial costs for enterprises. Those Taiwan-invested enterprises with good credit will continue to get low-cost loans from banks.
Beginning January 1, the Chinese mainland financial institutions will stop the practice of determining lending rates according to the size of business.
This will enable small and medium-sized Taiwan-funded companies not to pay extra more financial cost for the rise of interest rates, he said.

Bush is counting on China having the good sense not to do that. The fact that Bush has encouraged Taiwan not to stir the pot ought to make the Chinese realize that the US could be an ally, if the Chinese weren't so arrogant.

Much like the Arab world, China is a primitive uncivilized backwater. They rattle this saber whenever Taiwan becomes more assertive. Chen makes them nervous.
China is in no position to attack Taiwan, and with a rejuvenated and mandated Bush Presidency, their threats ring about as ominous as the latest howl of "jihad" from the Islamofascist curs scuttling in the dirt of Fallujah.
