Not only does alcohol make me smarter, but I'm much better looking after a few drinks. And all the women look good at closing time.

Well ya see, Norm, it's like this... A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo. And when the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members.
Doesn't this also lead to improvement of the predators as they must also become faster as the herd improves? or do they just learn to wait near the local "watering hole" and pick'em off as they stagger to their SUVs?

Are they really banning smoking in pubs in England? I had not heard that.
If true, we are in the end times aren't we?

Sounds like we need to readjust the baseline for the continuum. ;)

Are they really banning smoking in pubs in England? I had not heard that. Unfortunately, yes - it is not an issue I make passing jokes about. I've seen first hand the damage those bans have done to bars and pubs throughout the US.

Absolutely!
Alchohol helps sharpen the brain by killing off the weaker brain cells, thereby clearing the way for stronger synaptic pathway responses to any given stimuli.......

Ah geez...
This is worse than the "frequent masturbation may lead to lowered prostate cancer risk" article Lee of Right-thinking.com posted one time. His comments were pure gold, and applicable here as well:
"Like you needed another reason to do it."

Winston Churchill was a very prolific writer and he used to drink a bottle of champagne every night with his supper and then top it off with a snifter of brandy afterwards with a good cigar. It worked for him. Hemingway was a drunk and it killed him with the help of a significant dose of lead but he wrote quite well. Then there are those who drink and think life on the street can't be beat. I think it can work both ways.

Arguing that alcohol is not a drug and people who drink are not drug users is odd.
To: HankReardon
wow me too!! ok, is this the reason rugby players tend to be of higher intelligence??

Who really sponsored THIS "study"? The 'London Pub Owners Association'??

I agree, which is why I did no such thing. What I suggested was that considering all drugs to be the same (i.e., bad) was a tad silly and puritan. Also, whilst those of us who drink tea and coffee, or wine, are drug-users, the colloquial use of that term denotes something far removed from a gin and tonic before supper; even more so sitting down to afternoon tea.

Comparing coffee and tea to alcohol and other drugs, you have to admit is quite a stretch. If you keep on stretching, drugs could probably be found in the natural foods we eat.
