House (Illinois) votes to loosen voter-registration rules

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) Illinois residents could register to vote as late as two weeks before an election under legislation the House approved Tuesday.

People who take advantage of the new ``grace period'' in which to register would have to vote by mail or at a special location. The current deadline is a month before Election Day.

The bill passed 68-49 and now goes to the Senate, which approved similar legislation in the spring.

Rep. Robin Kelly, D-Matteson, the bill's sponsor, said voter-registration rules must meet voters' needs.

``People get more interested in voting and elections as the time draws nearer,'' Kelly said. ``Also, we're a very mobile society. We're moving all over the place and it may not be the first thing on their mind when they move to a new location.''

Republicans argued the measure could encourage fraud.

Rep. Bill Black, R-Danville, said there already are people wintering in Florida or attending college, for example who vote both at their temporary addresses and submit absentee ballots.

``That's not what the process was intended to be,'' Black said. ``Until we come up with a better validation process in registration, why should I sit quietly by and let people vote twice?''

Does this nonsense have to go on indefinitely? Can't the Feds set guidelines that would apply at least to elections for Federal positions?

Yes and No. Presidential election are conducted with rules set at the State level, Per Article 3.

Thanks for pointing that out. Guess it also means we can change it, although I doubt that would happen.

I haven't moved a lot in my life but when I have, registering to vote has been right near the top of things to do.

We do not need to make it easier to vote in Illinois, we need to make it harder. That way only dedicated people could vote.

I would suggest that an IQ test might be in order too. If you are smarter than an average turnip you can vote.

That would sure make the turnout smaller in the city of Chicago.

....Nothing personal against turnips mind you.

Sure, as long as they needs to vote in their appropriate precient
And they needs to be US citizens
And they needs not to be felons
And they needs to be alive
And they needs to only vote once..

I'll agree

And on the other hand, my daughter moved out of state more than ten years ago. Her name still has not been purged from the voter rolls. How many others (democrats) have moved from their home to the cemetery and remain on the rolls to cast their vote while they look at the roots of the grass?

This is so the they can move people into Illinois at the last minute to vote - just like the Gore people did in Minnesota in 2000 - I must admit - my daughter made the mistake of "registering to vote with MTV Rock the vote" got a receipt saying she was registered - then found out she was not registered after all - a republican of course- our election supervisors office wants to file a complaint- but she missed the Oct 4 cutoff. We should spend the next 4 years putting pressure on state election officials to make sure ACORN groups and others are not violating registration laws already in existance

I guess just the old regular voter fraud isn't good enough for them anymore.

Ha. Like it freaking matters in this doomed place. The Daley Fraud-and-Corruption Frappe' up north. The unbelievable gullible voters down south. The University liberals in the middle.

This state is, and has been, toast for....ever.

Frankly I think Felons should always be able to vote. There are several people who get a felony for political reasons and the government should not take their right to vote away. The government should allow every citizen to vote.

I also think two weeks is a good grace period. Here in Illinois we have school board elections and primary's and general elections and maybe a runoff. Its not easier to vote twice if you have to wait two weeks between registering and voting.

In Wisconsin you can register to vote in Milwaukee and run down to Chicago and vote again regardless of the grace period being two weeks or four.

God, I hate the Left. They hate this Country and the people who play by the rules (namely citizens)so much.

Fortunately, it will be a long time before Illinois determines the outcome of a presidential election again.

How Democrats Steal Elections - Top 10 Methods of Liberal Vote Fraud

1. Over-Voting. In Democrat strongholds like St. Louis, Philadelphia and Detroit, some precincts had 100% of their registered voters voting, with 99% of the ballots going to Gore. Clearly, multiple voting resulted in extra tallies for Gore in the 2000 election. (New York Post, 12/09/00).

2. Dead Voters. This classic Democratic method of vote fraud goes all the way back to 1960 in Chicago and Dallas. The 2000 election was no exception. In Miami-Dade County, for example, some of the 144 ineligible votes (those which officials actually admitted to) were cast by dead people, including a Haitian-American who's been deceased since 1977 (Miami-Herald, 12/24/00).

3. Mystery Voters. These "voters" cast votes anyway but are not even registered to vote. In heavily Democratic Broward County, for example, more than 400 ballots were cast by non-registered voters. (Miami-Herald 1/09/01)

4. Military ballots. Many of these votes were disqualified for the most mundane and trivial reasons. At least 1,527 valid military ballots were discarded in Florida by Democratic vote counters (Drudge Report, 11/19/00).

5. Criminals. Felons are a natural Democratic voter and they're protected on voter rolls across the country. In Florida at least 445 ex-convicts - including rapists and murderers -- voted illegally on November 7th. Nearly all of them were registered Democrats. (Miami-Herald 12/01/00)

6. Illegal aliens. These voters have long been a core liberal constituency, especially in California. In Orange County in 1996, Rep. Bob Dornan had his congressional seat stolen from him when thousands of illegal aliens voted for Loretta Sanchez (Christian Science Monitor, 9/2/97).

7. Vote-buying. Purchasing votes has long been a traditional scheme by Democrats, and not just with money. In the 2000 election in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Democratic workers initiate a "smokes-for-votes" campaign in which they paid dozens of homeless men with cigarettes if they cast ballots for Al Gore (Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, 11/14/00).

8. Phantom Voters. These voters don't really exist, but their ballots do. In the 1996 Lousiana Senate race, GOP candidate Woody Jenkins had the election stolen from him when he discovered that 7,454 actual votes were cast but had no paper trail to authenticate them (Behind the Headlines, F.R. Duplantier, 4/27/97).

9. Dimpled chads. Those infamous punch-cards were a ballot bonanza for Al Gore. Democratic poll workers in Palm Beach, Dade and Broward counties tampered and manipulated thousands of ineligible ballots and counted them for Gore, even though no clear vote could be discerned. (NewsMax.com 11/27, 12/22, 11/18, 11/19/00).

10. Absentee ballots. Normally it's assumed that Republicans benefit from absentee ballots. But in the case of Miami's 1997 mayoral election, hundreds of absentee ballots were made for sale or sent out to non-Miami residents. Fraud was so extensive in the race that the final results were overturned in court (FL Dept. of Law Enforcement Report, 1/5/98)."
