While the U.S. is "aggressively" pressuring the government of Iran to curtail its nuclear program, the Bush administration does not seek "regime change" in Tehran, Secretary of State Colin Powell said Sunday.
"We are not getting ready to invade Iran," Powell told CNBC "Wall Street Journal Report" host Maria Bartiromo. "We have no intention of regime change. That is our policy: no regime change."
Powell added, however, that "we don't approve of this regime. This regime takes actions that we don't find acceptable in a 21st century world. ... [But] it's up to the Iranian people" to decide their future.
An aggressive U.S. strategy has succeeded in alerting the European community to the threat posed by Iran's nuclear intentions and its ties to Mideast terrorism, Powell said.
"The problem has not been solved. But a heat lamp, a spotlight, has been put on Iran, making it harder for Iran to ignore the attention of the international community," he told CNBC.
Powell is only familiar with the beltway loop.
Powell is telling the truth. we aren't going to invade iran, and we should forget about "liberation" there. at best, if we need to use military power there, it should be to take out strategic targets. if the iranian people want to be liberated, let's drive some 18 wheelers full of munitions uncovered in iraq and drop it to them over the border. let them liberate themselves. that should be our policy there; iran is funding the insurgency in iraq, we should be supporting and supplying an insurgency in iran.
So many times he says things and it seems like he is speaking for himself only. I would be happy to see him replaced by someone whose loyalty to the President is implicit.
This sounds as if we support the status quo, which I sincerely doubt that we do.
Get rid of this NWO-loving maniac.
Bomb Iran and their nuclear programs and if they want to take us on in Iraq-well, they already have sent themselves over to Iraq. Iran needs to be watched closely and confronted when need be if we are serious in giving a death blow to terrorism.
Powel just became one of my least favorite people.
Ping
Powell is like that one guy in the band who's just a little out of tune or off the beat. I expect that he'll be leaving the administration soon -- probably in the next wave of resignations.
no, we can use military force to takeout strategic targets. that is separate from invasion and liberation.
We should be keeping them guessing.
Hint: "Nice doggie".
Maybe W is using Powell in a strategic way. I cannot believe that W is condoning Powell's public statements. Sec State speaks for the administration. W's the boss. So, I guess there may be some interesting developments soon. That's my prediction....

Re: Iran
Dear Mr. Secretary:
America most certainly has an obligation to see that regime change takes place in Tehran. Why?
Because it was due to America that the mullahs, led by their murderous leader the Assahollah Khomeini, took OVER Iran in the FIRST place, when the 39th occupant of the White House (aka Jimmy Fuqin' Carter) stabbed the Shah of Iran (remember him General? A solid U.S. ally?) in the back, allowing the Islamofascists to seize power, which led to the FIRST instance of Jihad-minded Muslim fanatics taking over a modern nation-state, from which they sponsored and financed terror operations across the globe TO THIS VERY DAY!
Because of Jimmy Carter's betrayal of the Shah, the Iranian people were sentenced to more than 25 years (as of this date) of repression, torture, Islamic excesses and the diversion of their nation's wealth away from the people and focused on the acquisition of nuclear weapons.
We OWE the Iranian people their freedom, just as we owe the Cuban people their freedom for allowing Fidel Castro to maintain his Communist dictatorship for 45 years, 90 miles from our shores. Both situations are a disgrace and we can thank Democratic presidents for both of them (Kennedy and Carter).
Oh, and Mr. Secretary?
Have a nice day.
Perfect, I couldn't agree more!
This could be part of the disinformation war. I wouldn't take it at face value.
OTOH, maybe he's looking to get fired so he can collect unemployment.
