There was a time when men like Arlen had the upper hand.
They saw to it that opposition views were strictly banned.
But times they are a-changing, and the wind has shifted course.
So if you plan on betting, try to find a better horse.
Sir Specter has a hist'ry that goes back to JFK.
When he claimed there was one bullet, so that he could pave the way
for a cover-up that reached beyond the shores of this fair land,
and into dark and smoky rooms where liberty is banned.
The cover-up succeeded, and Sir Specter felt his oats.
He campaigned to be a senator, and got sufficient votes.
He claimed to be a pubbie, but his claim was full of holes.
As was evidenced by rhetoric, and ugly leftist goals.
Judge Bork, his greatest victim, was defeated at the gate,
for loyalty to documents that made this country great.
But Specter deemed that loyalty a danger to the system:
'We cannot tolerate a man of character and wisdom!'
He also borked a man named Sessions - deemed unfit as well.
But Sessions then moved through the ranks, and so he lived to tell
that senate aspirations proved him worthy in his state,
and now he sits in congress - there's a justice found in fate.
Now he sits right there with Specter on a singular committee
that helps decide on judgeships - and he will not waste his pity
on the man who sought to keep him from a judgeship of his own,
even as his former adversary seeks to change his tone.
That tone's been ringing through the years. It reared its ugly head
when Clinton was impeached, and when the senate roll was read.
Sir Specter invoked Scottish Law and saved the traitor's term.
'Unproven!' was his rally cry, and Scottish law stood firm.
It seems that Scottish Law is held in even more esteem
than Constitution dictates, by this man who's on the team
of those who think that global law is now the way to go --
But Scottish Law has had its day
it's time for quid pro quo.
For Specter doesn't know that there's a force throughout the land
that sees him now for who he is, and seeks to force his hand
to call him on the lies he's told, the men he's sought to scuttle
from taking their anointed place, without a fair rebuttal.
Rebuttal's turned to just desserts. We will not see him sit
as chair of a committee whose philosophy won't fit
within his leftist framework, so it's time for us to say,
'We're wise to you, Sir Arlen! You've been borked
now go away!'

O-U-T-S-T-A-N-D-I-N-G!!!!!
I don't know whether to laugh or cry---or start calling you "Joanie Seuss". :)
Check your mail.
You need to send this to National Review (I think they have a poetry section).
yes Joanie, excellant poem.
Specter will be I believe...Borked.
In fact, the Borking process has already begun.
:)
I read this over my morning coffee. Thanks for starting my day on an upbeat note. ;)
I agree with the poster above. You should send it somewhere to be published.
You've got mail.

Ha! Now THAT is poetry, Joanie! (But no "there once was a man from Nantucket" preface?? :-D
I promise....
Joanie-F = the reincarnation of Dr. Seuss.
Is there anything you DON'T do well? {g}
Thanks for sharing this. Great poem and great ideas in it.
I love it when you talk Latin! ;)
Excellent, Joanie.
Here is a letter I wrote (not sure I should have used the snarlin' arlen nickname):
Dear Senator Cornyn,
Senator Specter is backing away from his threat to President Bush, but how trustworthy is he? Look at what the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette said in their endorsement of Mr. Specter:
"The best argument for his staying on is his seniority, which puts him in line to be the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee. In that capacity, he would be in a position to block some of the ideologically extreme federal judges likely to be nominated by President Bush in a second term, some of them for the Supreme Court. Before the Post-Gazette editorial board, he promised that no extremists would be approved for the bench."
Either he Senator Specter was lying when he said he would block the presidents nominees, or he was lying when he said he wouldnt. Why gamble on which way he will go? The fact that he was going around saying that the president hadnt won a mandate sure makes it sound like Snarlin Arlen will go back to his old ways once the heat is off. Please support Senator Kyl, or one of your other colleagues for chairman. Arlen Specter divides the party too much and will be too much of a distraction if made chairman. We can do better.
Respectfully yours,
Here are links to more letters people have written regarding Sen. Specter. (Despite the way some of the letters are written, please be aware, if you are not already, that Sen. Frist does not appoint the committee chairs, although he does have influence).

I'm sorry everybody. Cornyn is my state Senator and I'll have to have a good long talk with him.*~* If he even appears to be a jelly-spined, weak-kneed appeaser then I'll REALLY have a long talk with him!
You composed this? Geez', you continue to amaze me.
Wonderful piece of work joanie.

That's a very well written poem!
Smile on face.
