Will Rather Be Dumped? (We can only hope!)

CBS news reporters and staff are experiencing anxiety awaiting the release of the findings of an independing commission investigating the discredited 60 Minutes report by Dan Rather on Sept. 8 about George W. Bush's National Guard service, veteran Face the Nation anchor Bob Schieffer told today's (Thursday) Philadelphia Inquirer. "We're all apprehensive," Schieffer told the newspaper. "Nobody knows what this commission is going to find. Look, we made a terrible mistake. CBS has admitted it made a terrible mistake, and Dan [Rather, who fronted the report] has apologized. We take this very seriously, and some serious steps are going to have to be taken." Shieffer indicated that no decision about the "serious steps" is likely to be made until the commission's report is released. "I guarantee you that CBS will do whatever it takes to get our credibility back. If we don't have credibility, we'll cease to be. That's our coin of the realm," he said. The Inquirer cited internal rumors at the network that Rather may be asked to step down as CBS Evening News anchor. "Obviously, I'm concerned for Dan," Schieffer, a longtime friend, said. "He's holding up pretty well under the circumstances, but his situation has taken its toll, no question. How could it not?"

Guess 'independing' is an obscure alternative to 'independent' upon looking it up.

"Has he always been as mentally unstable as he is now? I never watched him (my father wouldn't let me!) until a few times recently. What I see is a man who appears to be suffering from dementia. "

He is off the charts nuts. I saw Leno do a compilation of his "off the cuff" statements that are supposed to be so...well, I don't know WHAT they are supposed to be....like the ones about the frog with pockets and guns in those pockets, the snake and greased rope, etc. He is a total buffoon and his pathetic attempt to be "folksy" is laughable.

Is Dan nuts? As he might say: The horse is around the bend but the saddle is still in the barn.

What SeeBS and Dan Rather did was willfully and with malice aforethought, lie and knowingly present false and doctored evidence to support a story that was aimed at influencing a Presidential election.

Absolutely right. The fraud was exposed within days and CBS should have taken its role of guardian of the public trust to heart. It did not, apparently in the thrall of Rather and his surrogates. For this reason alone, CBS is not permitted in this house, and I have made sure to make the anti-CBS case to all my co-workers and friends. My kids get it, too. CBS is finished as a news organization.

P.S. I do not recall any kind of Rather apology that was meaningful. It was of the "sorry we got fooled" variety, not the "I am sorry I participated" kind.

Dan Rather will never be sorry for what he did, he is only sorry it wasn't true. Maybe he thought he could take down the President and be a national hero to his lemmings.

I can hear the Ratherism now in his affected down South-down home drawl...

"CBS news reporters and staff are as nervous as a long tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs awaiting the release of the findings of an independing commission investigating the 60 Minutes report on Sept. 8th about George W. Bush's National Guard service."

Heck, Rather is not in the least sorry that he was peddling lies about George Bush. He's only sorry that he was caught out by the blogosphere for intentionally doing so.

If the report of the investigation does come out, CBS will (i) find a graceful way to cut Dan Rather loose, and (ii) spin it as though the credibility of CBS and its ongoing commitment to truth has been restored.

You can dress up a pig, but it's still a pig. CBS has been exposed to be nothing more than a tabloid.

CBS attempted to influence the election for the DNC with doctored documents. One half-hearted apology and a couple of weeks later, they planned their own "October surprise" on the Sunday before the election. They planned to use UN documents about 300 tons of weapons in Iraq. They planned to air the story so that there would be no time for the President to respond. The later incident wasn't Dan Rather's alone; it went to the highest levels of CBS.

All of this was a violation of the public trust. "Bias" should be a four letter word to the media. To CBS, bias is the means to the agenda.

The FCC will not revoke the license of CBS to deliver news, CBS will replace Dan Rather with another of his ilk, and we'll be fighting the CBS bias again in 2008.

Rather apologized? Silly, stupid, uninformed me - somehow I missed the publication of the full text of the personal letter of apology addressed to President Bush, containing the full acceptance of responsibility for misleading the public at such a critical time. I suppose I just needed to be more observant....

Here is how Rush Limbaugh says about Dan Rather's job now:'Dan Rather doesn't need to be fired. He's been more humiliated going to work every day and having to work Election Night and report those results than anything could have been done if he got fired. I'm glad he was there...'

Under the rems of the BBC charter, the BBC are responsible for collecting the television licensing fee.

The UK like a lot of European countries finance their bradcasting by charging every tv set and computer owner capable of recieving TV signals an annual fee (about $200).

They employ about 15,000 just to collect this fee. It is mandatory for TV stores to register each set sold by ser.no
and customer details to the BBC.

Thanks for the update - so the $200 per year really is extortion, since the BBC is the sole recipient of the fees and independent stations have to generate revenue from advertisements. Government should eliminate the fee and the BBC - I can't think of any other propaganda entity that is subsidized/nationalized like this since Pravda.

We all need to be doing that. If someone says they saw something on 60 Minutes or CBS news, you just answer, "CBS has no credibility." No discussion of the issue whatsoever, just "I don't believe it because it was on CBS." Like the old Rolling Stones' song, "It's the singer, not the song."

A couple of weeks ago, after the Patriots lost to the Steelers, I walked into my office on Monday and asked, "Did the Patriots really lose to the Steelers? I wasn't sure I could believe it because it was on CBS!"
All the liberals groaned. All the conservatives laughed.
