GENEVA - Flags were flown at half mast at the United Nations on Thursday, as the world body paid tribute to late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat by granting him the same honours as a head of state, a UN spokeswoman said.
UN Secretary General Kofi Annan asked us to apply the same protocol as for heads of state, said Marie Heuze, spokeswoman for the UNs European headquarters in Geneva.
The president of the Palestinian Authority, which only has observer status at the UN partly because it is not an internationally-recognised state, died at a hospital in Paris early on Thursday.
The UN said early Thursday that Annan early Thursday was deeply moved by Arafats death.
For nearly four decades, he expressed and symbolized in his person the national aspirations of the Palestinian people, a statement released by the Secretary-Generals office in New York said.
Well since the UN is dominated by dictators and one-party states, they are kindred spirits.
Did the UN fly the flag at half mast when Stalin died? Or Mao? Just another sign that the UN is UNdermining US.
What next, the Nobel Peace Prize? Oh. Never mind.
It might be for the UN itself.
Later today, Kofi will also set fire to a specially selected ceremonial Jew, in Arafat's honor.
Oh for Christ's sake this is too much
GET UN OUT OF US
Another disgusting show of UN support for terrorism.
It is long past time for the US to get out ot the UN and for the UN to get out of the US.
Hey I just looked up on Google about Stalin and sure enough they did. Here is the blurb dated March 8, 1953: Tributes to Stalin from http://www.hinduonnet.com/thehindu/2003/03/08/stories/2003030800790900.htm:
"At United Nations headquarters, the flags of all 60 member nations were taken down, and the sole flag of the U.N. fluttered at half-mast.
Don't know the answer to this - did they fly them at half mast when Reagan died?
I too was deeply moved by Arafat's death. This morning - after my first cup of coffee. Flushed twice.
Gee, why all this sadness? I think they should celebrate by giving out free BLTs and beer.
They need to hoist a dead pig up the flagpole too
i wonder if they will do this for the pope (an actual head of state) when he dies? i sort of doubt it.
This is madness.
Isn't it half-STAFF when it is on land and half-MAST while on ship?
Just curious.
