I love the current cover photo and God Bless our troops!
But, that 2nd cover "Verdict" "W2" and "seals" = made me think "condemned", "World War", and "steals" - I thought it was subliminally very negative.
When the Iraq war first started they were on the mail ban list...I don't know if the ban has been lifted since my hubby is now home...
Third time I have seen this picture.
I love it.

And yet, if this same brave young warrior were to be foolish enough to come to NYC for a beer or a nice dinner, he would be told by our Esteemed Mayor that he is not welcome to have a smoke while doing so.

I was shocked to see the front page of your newspaper.
Showing a GI smoking and portraying it as being cool is disgusting, to say the least.
First of all, you are promoting smoking, even though it is a health hazard.
Secondly, our brave men and women are fighting a tough war in Iraq, and to show them as you did does not do them justice.
Maybe showing a Marine in a tank, helping another GI or drinking water would have had a more positive impact on your readers.
Smoking should be outlawed, not endorsed.

The absolute worst was Ham and MFrs. I knew guys who actually liked the crap. Three hours later they were capable of clearing a bunker under fire by breaking wind only once.
None of that surprises me............they showed up here at FR as well.
Guess what...........it's that Marine, who they wish to deny a smoke, that is protecting their freedom to deny him and make nasty comments about the picture in the newspaper.

November 14, 2004 -- The young Marine dubbed the "Marlboro Man" after his front-page appearance in The Post has become a celebrity poster boy for the U.S. effort in Fallujah and a hero in his hometown.
But there's one drawback to being the Marlboro Man — everyone keeps bumming your smokes. "If you want to write something," Marine Lance Cpl. James Miller, 20, told a reporter this week, "tell Marlboro I'm down to four packs, and I'm here in Fallujah till who knows when. Maybe they can send some. And they can bring down the price a bit."
Marlboro declined comment.
A portrait of the rugged and muddied Miller — snapped after 12 hours of bloody combat with guerrillas — became a powerful symbol for the American forces' gritty effort to retake Fallujah. Marine brass were thrilled with the poignancy of the shot, and Lt. Gen. John Sattler visited Miller's company to applaud them for the feature. News agencies that ran the shot were besieged with calls and e-mails asking for a way to contact the young man.
And back home, in his Appalachian hometown of Jonancy, Ky., his mother reveled at seeing his picture on television just to know her oldest of three sons was OK.
