Interesting idea on WMAL in DC today. Proposing Lieberman as Ashcroft's replacement. THe argument was that Bush could "reach across party lines" by appointing a conservative democrat (who is a pretty decent guy, if you exclude the brain fart as Gore's running mate) AND that would open a Senate seat in a state with a Republican governor.
Whoa! Wouldn't FITZGERALD be great?
I really did understand you, but my point is the Lieberman as AG under President Bush proposition is simply not a good idea no matter which way you look at it.
I and others posted upthread a list of numerous issues that need to be addressed by the DOJ that Lieberman would not or could not investigate.
He's busy right now and needs to see these grand juries through. He would not be able to take it on right now.
Plus, on Fitzgerald, he's doing investigation independent of the administration. Appointing him would make any indictments resulting from the grand juries he's been conducting, "partisan" in the eyes of Bush detractors.
I think Lieberman would see right through that tact and say no thanks... Does Lieberman know anything about commerce? He can fill that void without pushing any social policies.
Bad for gun rights, good for abortionists, and likes to limit speech, not the best choice out there.
All of this assumes Lonesome Joe would accept the offer, which I doubt he would.
Lieberman has a good record on defense issues and support for Israel, but he is WAY too liberal to even be considered for AG.
Just say NO! Don't give the commie libs anything! Do you think they would give the conservatives any handouts if they had won? Anybody who associates with the pinko commie lib rats cannot be trusted and this includes McCain. Don't forget McCain was being courted by kerry for VP. Just say NO!
I think the idea of Lieberman being a "good" guy was planted on FR many moons ago. I suspect, but don't intend to try to prove it, that it was planted by some of our "visitors" from DU.
Have we forgotten that Lieberman was dubbed Ole Flip-Flop Joe by Freepers during Pres. Bush's first run for the presidency? Have we forgotten that Lieberman went with the prevailing winds of politics by changing his opinions to suit Gore's candidacy? Would we trust Lieberman to keep his word?
LOL! I would flee from it!
I must say, I posted this before I left for work this morning. I just checked it and was a bit surprised by the number of responses!
I knew FReepers would like this discussion. I don't think I'm on board with Joe as AG (position is far too important). I'm also tired of the media saying that Bush has to concede things to the Dems. HELLO! Newsflash, he won, the GOP won, and the DEMS have to reach across the aisle.
Yes, we need a conservative AG, not a Lieberman or a Giuliani. And I trust President Bush is mindful of this.
A perfect position for Joe Lieberman would be Secretary of State. But alas, that won't happen as it would 'inflame' the Islamofascists.
He'd be fine for DOD or DHS.
Lieberman was CT's AG early in his career, BTW.
Who only got his shot at the VP after a meeting with the democratic party powers in Camp David resulting in a 'changed' man that now saw the light over the Clinton impeachment.
Since when are rats ever grateful or cooperative when we reach across the isle?
It's a mistake to think that some bridge will be built. It will simply give rats more power in strategic places, and I'm against it.
Sam Nunn would be a good choice for either A.G. or Sec. of Homeland Security if Ridge steps down.
I like the idea. One of the few Democrats that I have a good deal of respect for. I'd trust him in this capacity although I doubt he would take it. But it is worth a try.
