President Bush yesterday moved aggressively to resurrect his plan to relax rules against illegal immigration, a move bound to anger conservatives just days after they helped re-elect him.
The president met privately in the Oval Office with Sen. John McCain to discuss jump-starting a stalled White House initiative that would grant legal status to millions of immigrants who broke the law to enter the United States.

That was a charge during his election campaign. His opponent charged that Tancredo was a hypocrite hiring illegals. The fact is that the contractor Tancredo hired to do work on his home may or may not have hired illegal immigrants. In response, Tancredo said how would he be able to determine if the workers were legally eligible to work? Employers don't go out of their way to make a distinction, so how could a homeowner?
It's a "stretch" to say that Tancredo is hiring illegals.
Not last time I checked. You're either ignorant or a troll.
No, actually, it's not that simple.
When you give up one part of your country, you are eventually you are going to give up another part. Then another part. Then another.
I wouldn't dream of moving to Hondorus, doing all kinds of objectionable thing (like waving the American flag, committing crimes and pissing in their doorways), and saying "if you don't like it, move". Sure they would think I was nuts.
I guess all remaining Americans can cluster in Maine in the year 2080, but we'd probably rather have the counry fixed and assimilated to at least a reasonable degree.
In a fiery 90-minute speech, the Cuban leader claimed that the United States wrongly appropriated more than half of Mexico's territory, mostly through successive invasions. These include Texas, California, Arizona, and New Mexico.
"Now, they are terrorized because Mexicans cross'' into what is properly their territory, Castro said. He said that in effect, Mexicans are reconquering their own land. Castro's comments were contained in a speech he gave at the close of an international congress of educators in Havana, the Cuban capital, including several hundred teachers from Mexico. Excerpts were contained in a dispatches from Havana by the Mexican government news agency Notimex and other news sources, in Mexico City.
Borders of a sovereign nation are a 'narrow view'?
The voice of selfishness, ClintonBeGone. Go away.
I used to live in Arizona, and I undertand the feelings of this area of the country towards illegal immigration.
However, I support Bush on this initiative.
Hispanics voted something like 46% for Bush. His strategy of embracing the Hispanic vote is brilliant strategy for the GOP. Moreoever, FOX News reported this morning that the Black vote will be more than cancelled out by the Hispanic vote in 2008. The Black vote was as high for the Democrats in 2004 as it was in 2000.
Lastly, there are millions of Hispanics that are model immigrants. Many are very Conservative Catholics and Christians.
We need build a bridge to these people as a political party. It all is not just politics---we are a nation of immigrants. The Big Tent should prevail.
.........and then we have freepers fall for it at face value.
Right... Whatever gets the all-important GOP more votes. Beliefs and principles be damned. Brilliant strategy.
OK, so we ought to exempt certain employers from following the law? Like old people, or small businesses, or Republican donors...
Keep 'em coming, CJ, you may set a record on this thread.
What "Beliefs and principles " do we surrender by letting these people become citizens?
OK?
Those that we compromise in order to make ourselves more palatable to liberal-leaning voters or those who wish to support more liberal government.
But above all, we compromise the belief that the RIGHT way to become a citizen if you are not born one is to wait in line, for years at times, behind the few people left who have enough integrity and love for this country to obey its laws before they are even citizens.
Appreciate that ;)
This confirms my DC 'insider' friend who said Bush has two issues he is passionate about: the War on Terrorism and Hispanic/Mexican immigration issues.
Hey, we could appeal to murders and rapists too - just grant them amnesty.
We have to keep up the pressure on officials and write to our Senators and Congressmen and make things as tough as possible for illegal aliens and their enablers/employers.
I can understand that. I am not saying Bush is only doing this for the Hispanic vote either. How many elections is he personally running for? The answer is Zero.
He developed a strong relationship with Hispanics during his life in Texas. His appointment of Gonzalez as appointment of Attorney General speaks of this.
Also, thanks for the thanks brother.
Go away troll.
