The political genius of George W. Bush

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Whether you are a Democrat, a Republican or an independent, it is hard not to look at President Bush's re-election victory last week and conclude that he is probably one of the three or four most talented politicians of the last half of a century.

Why do I write that? Think about it. In 10 short years, George Walker Bush has won not just one but three high-profile political races that most able politicians would have lost.

Many people will point out that Bush has enjoyed advantages that most people never dream of -- inherited wealth, a famous family name, unbelievable connections and multiple second chances. But while those are legitimate critiques, the reality is that FDR's sons never won the presidency; there never was a David Eisenhower administration; and Ronald Reagan's kids have never inspired much political fear.

Others will write that Karl Rove deserves much or all of the credit. But do you really believe that you can beat former Texas Gov. Ann Richards, Vice President Al Gore and Sen. John Kerry just by being a "puppet"? Sure, Rove helps -- as all savvy advisers do. Remember Dick Morris, Lee Atwater and Michael Deaver?

Bush had a LOT more to do with these three wins than some posters on this thread will admit.

Do you think it's easy to present an attractive picture of yourself to the voters when the entire media is shilling for the other side and spends all its time demonizing you and preventing you from speaking directly to the people?

We see all sides on the news on the internet, but the great majority of voters don't. The picture they have of the economy and the Iraq war is what they are given on TV. Yet Bush won anyway.

Yes, there is momentum toward traditional conservative values. But it's not that easy to exploit. Ask Keyes. Ask Bob Dole.

Without a great candidate like GWB in 2008, it's not at all clear that we will win the next election. We have the momentum, but it would disappear in short order if the wrong candidate is nominated.

Praise with faint damn. "Mediocre economy" etc etc. Intriguing, but still clearly a CNN production, with obvious bias. "The guy's a smart politician, not anyone who won on merits."

I am not a fan of CNN but i am a fan of GWB.I agree he is one in a million men that has the savvy to win elections. It is his honesty and his belief that everyone wants to hear the truth. If anyone listens he does both and he delivers. He does not buy in to the idea tell them anything they will believe it.
