NEAR FALLUJAH, Iraq - More than 4,000 U.S. Marines and Army troops punched their way into northeastern Fallujah on Monday, kicking off a massive assault dubbed Operation Phantom Fury that seeks to put an end to half a year of insurgent control of the Sunni Muslim city.

The prelude to the assault on the Askari neighborhood was a crushing air and artillery bombardment of the city that rose to a crescendo by Monday evening, with U.S. strike jets dropping bombs around the clock and big guns pounding the city every few minutes with high-explosive shells.

Meanwhile, insurgents in Baghdad and nearby Ramadi tried to keep up the pressure on the coalition forces with new attacks, including one on a Catholic church in the capital.

Earlier Monday U.S. troops had fought their way into the city's western outskirts, seizing two bridges over the Euphrates River and helping Iraqi soldiers take the city's main hospital in the first stage of a major assault on the insurgent stronghold.

Why does he have a puny 40cal?

I don't, I didn't make it. But if I'd made it it wouldn't be a chrome plated gun that's for sure.

I picture Rummy as a Colt 1911 kinda guy....

No, he wouldnt last long in Texas.

I think Al Sadr will get his wish of fighting to his last drop of blood:

Moqtada al-Sadr has rejected invitations to participate in a national conference and national council, and had not indicated any willingness to take part in the elections scheduled for January. Al-Sadr vowed on 09 August to fight what he called the "occupation of Al-Najaf" until the "last drop of blood" is spilled.

I heard a soundbyte on the radio this morning from a commander in the field, on the ground in Fallujah, who said that coalition forces will sweep through Fallujah with force and any insurgent they missed on the first go around they will come back and take them out.

[snip] ... Before the main assault, Allawi visited the main U.S. base outside Fallujah to rally Iraqi troops.

"The people of Fallujah have been taken hostage ... and you need to free them from their grip," he told the soldiers at the camp, who swarmed around him when he arrived. "Your job is to arrest the killers but if you kill them, then so be it."

"May they go to hell!" the soldiers shouted, and Allawi replied: "To hell they will go."

I like this quote. I'm amazed that it got out of AP ...

Of course asked by a sniveling reporter in an equally sniveling tone.

I heard that too. Mow them down, and then go back and pick up the strays that survived.

Good.

I'm series! The first question to Rumsfeld was about whether he would stay on as Defense Secretary or not.

on the news with Rummy now - a reporter asking (yet another anti-Bush/pro-failure) guestion concerning 500 iraqi troops not showing up - don't they KNOW that in our own Revolutionary War the militai were sometimes less than dependable???

geeeODS, what partisan hacks these reporters are!
