"So should we also legalize heroin because there are opiod analgesics?"I think you mistunderstand the premise of this article. Heroine is illegal, as it should be. But there are many legitimate, legal, useful opiates. Marijuana is illegal, as are all cannaboids. But there may be many legitimate uses for marijuana derivatives that could benefit society. Studies need to be done, and people need to start thinking about it instead of reacting from their gut. Plus, when was the last time someone died from a marijuana overdose, or went on a pot-crazed crime spree?

Heroin was legally PRESCRIBED for years, and was apparently very useful for intractable pain. Marijuana compounds were also at one time, widely prescribed by legit docs. If something works, (or doctors at the time think it does) it shouldn't be kept out of the Pharmacopeia. Lots of things always in there that later are replaced by something better, turn out to be not so good, or just plain go out of fashion.
That's a lot different than allowing street use. Cocaine for example, is a very valuable legitimate drug, as well as being a hot seller on every street corner in the country. Oxycontin is an underground street drug, but it is also validly prescribed everyday.
Also, these natural compounds are incredibly complex, and the lab geeks can refine literally hundreds of useful (or not) compounds from them.

Let's remember that heroin was developed as a cure for morphine addiction.

So should we also legalize heroin because there are opiod analgesics? We should get the government out of it. That's why.
If it was found to cure cancer, would you still be opposed?
