i don't think that it's a thin veneer to assume that when you run somebody or something over that you feel a bump.
Non sequitur. Bumpy ground will make a bump. too.
Methuen is a well-to-do boston suburb and i hardly think that there are too many "potter's field" driveways around.
It's about the same population density as Fredericksburg, VA. Allow me to thereby invalidate your point, since I know Fredericksburg well. Besides, who said anything about a driveway? Another unwritten fact you implied from the article. Care to guess how many of my vehicles are actually parked in my driveway?
and not parking on a big pile of leaves is like looking both ways when you cross the street. should be common sense.
Parking what? How big a pile? Parking a Yugo on a three foot pile may not make sense. Parking a 4x4 on a 1 foot "pile" isn't even worth noting.
As for common sense - common sense would dictate that you don't conclude negligence unless you know all the facts. Except for you.
an activist judge? aw now that hurts! I didnt' glean anything out of that story like some other folks did like about fences, garagae, etc..
No, you just gleaned a lot of unwritten information about the relative fire hazard in what he did, the size of his yard, the information he was operating on, what he was doing, etc.
but you said something about tear-assing around in the yard without knowing who or what was about? something like that. how do you know that that isn't what he was doing?
Exactly. Thank you for making my point. I don't know that he wasn't being negligent. You don't know that he was. You don't even know what the article means by park. The title says car, the body says truck - if by 'car' they mean 'truck', it's hard to know what any of it implies. Except for you, I guess.
were the kids in the truck in the cab or in the bed?
What, you haven't found the answer to this question IMPLIED in the article somewhere? Hmmm, you must be slipping.

can you tell me a circumstance where parking on a pile of leaves is a GOOD idea?
one doesn't have to glean much to know that the hot parts of a car can ignite leaves, and therefore parking on them isn't too smart, but go ahead - tell me when would parking on a pile of leaves be smart?

Leave it to someone at FreeRepublic to imply that the guy PURPOSELY ran over his little girl. I hate when Freepers act this way.

tell me when would parking on a pile of leaves be smart?
Anytime the height of the vehicle is sufficient not to be a fire hazard. Then, it's not a matter of smart or stupid, it's a non-issue.
My truck is parked right now at home in the middle of a SEA of leaves a foot deep. There's still a foot between those and any part of the underbelly of the truck. The leaves are still awaiting my efforts to scoop them into the bed and cover them with a tarp to haul away. It's SMART for me to park here, since it would be stupid to park 100 yards away and haul the leaves the extra distance.
I can think of other scenarios, but I doubt you'd care.

don't tell me that since your truck is tall enough that you can park on a foot high pile of leaves that you're inferring that our methuen guy's truck is like that too?;-)
what would you have done had there been a rake buried in that pile of leaves and punctured your tires?
