Senator Charles Schumer says fellow New York Democratic Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton is the front-runner for the party's 2008 presidential nomination.
But Schumer attributes that to "other people speculating" about the former first lady's future plans. Schumer says he believes Clinton's focus remains on serving New York in the US Senate.
There's speculation that she could be a major contender for the 2008 nomination. Before that, she'll face re-election for her Senate seat in 2006.
Schumer's comments were made this morning at an Albany supermarket as he began the second day of a three-day tour across the state to thank voters for his record-setting re-election victory on Tuesday.
Schumer is refusing to address speculation he'll use the re-election win as a stepping stone to running for governor in 2006.

A cool, calm, collected look at the electoral map indicates (to me) the following:
- There is not a single blue state that Hillary would lose in 2008. PA?-I don't think so. WI?-Nope. MN?-nada. MI?-gimme a break. NH?-too many MA transplants.
- Therefore, all she he to do is pick up OH (probably not) or FL (not if Jeb runs, but pretty likely otherwise, especially if Obama is the VP).
- The combo of NM, IA, and NV would lead to an Electoral College tie. I don't know how it would be broken when there's not an incumbent. Insights would be helpful.
We'd better enjoy the next four years and get a lot done, because it REALLY doesn't look good in '08. We have to hope Hillary goes off her rocker in the primaries (doubtful-she's the most stage-managed candidate in history).
Given her negative statements on the Electoral College in the past, it would be the irony of ironies, but VERY VERY possible that Hillary could lose the popular vote by millions and still be elected.
We need to put a Rudy shaped speed bump in her way...

Maybe if she ran against Buchannan or Keyes and Tammy Faye.
But she couldn't beat someone like Giuliani in NY, CA, Texas OR Florida. That run would turn off the religious right for sure, but she could NOT take those states from Giuliani. A Giulianni ticket with a conservative Frist as VP -- we'll see ya Hill. Buh-bye. And the "evangelicals" (gross, hate the term -- I prefer "Christians") could bide their time knowing Giuliani might be prochoice but would NEVER select a prochoice judge. Let's be reasonable here.
I agree they are pretty dumb after this last campaign I would not be surprised if she still runs.
I believe the entire idea of filibustering conservative judicial appointments was HIS in the first place, thereby requiring a vote of 60 Senators to proceed on any given nomination, the big-government lawyer-loving control-freak bastard.
Against Giuliani, Hillary would probably lose NY, but I don't think she'd lose CA. TX would be a hold, and FL would be up for grabs.
Other than NY, I still don't see her losing a blue state against Giuliani--not even NJ or CT. And I don't see her losing ANY blue states against anyone else.
I'll grant you that Giuliani appears to the be the best bet against Hillary at the moment. I'd be much happier with Condi Rice, but how she would do actually running for office is a total unknown.
I think the point that Hillary is within a red state or two of the Presidency is valid, and of course frightening.
While Rudy is obviously an engaging personality, politically Rudy and Hillary are suprisingly similiar. Hillary votes with the Republicans on most defense issues.
Kerry had the same reputation until he won the nomination. The Republicans are not going to try to light a fire under a Democrat's ass until they have to.
But that has the word "Christ" in it. Wouldn't want to offend anyone.

The most telling thing I have ever heard about Hillary - Dick Morris last night described her as "Bill Clinton without the compassion." He said every bad thing that happened in those 8 years (sans sex scandals, theoretically) came from her.

My interpretation of what I see at this link indicates that she wouldn't make abortion illegal, but that she would be for many kinds of restrictions on it (admittedly reading between lines):

She's like a lot of others, who strongly oppose abortion, would never have one themselves regardless of the hardships, but can't seem to make the leap to the idea that the law has to support these kinds of moral choices for people, especially for people who are under duress (older boyfriend pressuring an underage girl to have one, etc.).
I believe Condi would appoint strict constructionist judges to the federal courts. Part of that strict construction would be the inability to find the "right to privacy" that the Roe v Wade judges found emanating in the penumbras.
The biggest problem with Condi is whether or not the GOP has truly excised racism from its base. I believe it has, but the failure of Bobby Jindal to gain the Louisiana governorship last year is very worrisome. I know Jindal is in Congress now, which is a good thing, but I can only ascribe his governorship loss to a failure of the base to turn out to support him. This is important because I don't see the general African-American vote going to her to any significant degree, especially after the inevitable "Uncle Thomasina" campaign she would have to endure.
It also doesn't help that she has never run for political office.
Hillary is pretending to be a pro-war hawk because she realizes that it sells and that her vote won't turn things around. Very clever--when you don't believe in anything but your own power, you'll do anything to get it.
