Agreed, racism exist everywhere, even today. Slavery however, was mostly in the South, and was the reason the Republican Party began in the first place: to end it!
Republicans have always been about freedom. For everyone...even Iraqis and Cubans!!! Our first slogan was
"Free soil, free labor, free speech, free men..."

"Free soil, free labor, free speech, free men..."The free men to whom they referred were not former slaves.

Our first slogan was "Free soil, free labor, free speech, free men..." I've got a copy of an old Lincoln/Hamlin campaign poster from 1860 and it says something quite different:
"Free Speech, Free Homes, Free Territory - Protection to American Industry"
The first half referred to the Homestead Act, aka the welfare of the 19th century. The second half referred to the massive tax hike the GOP was busy trying to cram through the Congress that year. So forgive me if I don't look to favorably upon the GOP's policy agenda back then.
