The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

I'm asking this out of complete ignorance. This type of weapon would take out anything electrical, right? Would it bring down an airplane? I assume it would take out the communications at airports, etc.

Five firefighters hurt battling fire on British Airways plane

BOSTON (AP) — A fire was discovered aboard a British Airways flight shortly after it landed at Logan International Airport on Monday night, and five firefighters were injured battling the blaze, officials said.

The firefighters complained of burning in their throats and eyes, MassPort spokesman Phil Orlandella said.

The captain of the London-to-Boston Flight 239 called the Logan control tower after it landed around 9:30 p.m. and said a cockpit indicator showed a fire in the avionics compartment on the underside of the plane.

There were 219 passengers and 14 crew members aboard. None were injured, Orlandella said.

“They were already de-planing when this fire happened,” Orlandella said.

A British Airways spokeswoman said the airline was investigating and could not comment further.

The fire’s cause was not immediately known, and it was unclear what substance might have caused the firefighters’ injuries.

"You don't think this 'piece of cloth' might be the black flag with the AQ logo?"

True. But it also has something to do with the Iranian backed "Army of the Mahdi" in southern Iraq.

As the late Ayatollah Khomeini was fond of saying:

"The Road to Jerusalem passes through Karbala".
"Tariq al-Qods" ("The Road to Jerusalem").

The "Qods Force" is the organization within the IRGC that UBL (but mostly Zawahiri) and AQ has worked with since the early 1990s. They were the ones who engineered Mogadishu in 1993.

The same folks who trained up Sadr and his "Army of the Mahdi" were the same ones who helped get AQ up and running.

I think Imad Mughniyeh used to run Qods.

Tariq al-Qods.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/Iraq/Story/0%2C2763%2C1188061%2C00.html

"Last June Mr Sadr brought these irregulars together as the Mahdi Army. Mahdi is Arabic for "the promised one" or "divinely guided one", and for Shias, much more so than for Sunnis, is a figure equivalent to Christ's return on Judgment Day. One Islamic tradition speaks of fighters arriving from the east bearing black flags to slaughter unbe lievers, when the Mahdi would appear. Various figures down the centuries claimed to be the Mahdi, the one familiar in Britain being the Sudanese leader who killed General Gordon."

Iranian Figure Says Revolution Guard Trains Muqtada al-Sadr's Supporters on Fighting Techniques

London: Al-Sharq al-Awsat (Internet Version-WWW) in Arabic 09 Apr 04 [Report by Ali Nuri Zadah: "Iranian Source: Revolution Guard Trains 1,000 Muqtada al-Sadr Supporters on Guerilla Warfare, Explosions; Reveals Training Held in 3 Camps Near Iraqi Borders and Was Accompanied by $80 Million in Financial assistance"]

A source in the Al-Quds Forces, which are affiliated to the Iranian Revolution Guard, has disclosed that three training camps and centers have been established on the Iranian-Iraqi borders to train members of the Al-Mahdi Army that was established by Muqtada al-Sadr.

In an interview with Al-Sharq al-Awsat, the source who recently returned to Iran from Iraq, then left Iran on a secret mission and decided to stay abroad, said that 800 to 1,200 Iraqi young men, supporters of Al-Sadr, have received training on guerilla warfare tactics, the fabrication of bombs and explosives, the use of light weapons, and on surveillance, monitoring, and espionage operations in the three camps that are located in Qasr-e Shirin, Ilam and Hamid that are adjacent to the border southern Iraqi governorates where the Shiites constitute the majority.

Al-Sharq al-Awsat has also learned that the Iranian embassy in Baghdad recently distributed 400 satellite phones to Al-Sadr supporters, men of religion, and students from Al-Kazimiyah, Al-Sadr city, and al-Najaf.

The Iranian source, known by the observers under the code name of Abu-Haydar said that the intelligence services of the Iranian Revolution Guard have dispatched radio and television transmission equipment to the Shiite cities and that Muqtada al-Sadr and his supporters are using this equipment. The source explained that President Khatami and the officials in his government refused to meet with Muqtada al-Sadr when he visited Iran last June. But the supreme leader Ali Khamene'i ordered that he should be well received at the request of Ayatollah Kazim al-Ha'iri, the spiritual godfather of Muqtada al-Sadr and Khamene'i's teacher.

Khamene'i, after being chosen by the Assembly of Experts as the supreme leader of the regime, was taught by Ayatollah Mahmud Hashemi, the former chairman of the Supreme Council of the Islamic Revolution in Iraq and the current chief of the Iranian Judiciary; and by Kazim al-Ha'iri who gave him his degree in jurisprudence [Ijtihad]. During his visit to Tehran, Muqtada al-Sadr met with Hashemi Rafsanjani, chairman of the Iranian Expediency Council; Brigadier General Murtada Reza'i, head of the Iranian Revolution Guard intelligence service; Brigadier General Qasim Sulaymani, commander of the Al-Quds Forces in charge of Iraqi affairs; and other officials beside Kazim al-Ha'iri, Mahmud Hashemi, and Ali al-Ha'iri, the son in law of Ayatollah Ali Meshkini, head of the Assembly of Experts. Ali al-Ha'iri is currently in Al-Najaf, where he heads the Khamene'i mission there and is in charge of disbursing monthly salaries to the students and men of religion who emulate Khamene'i.

The source that is close to the Al-Quds Forces said that more than $80 million have been disbursed to Muqtada al-Sadr over the past months as financial assistance, in addition to training his men and sending relief material, including food, medicines, equipment, and furniture.

The source said that the members of Al-Quds Forces and the Revolution Guard intelligence who are in Iraq lead the operations against the coalition forces. Also, these men have carefully studied and prepared the media campaigns by Muqtada al-Sadr's supporters against the senior Shiite religious authorities like Ali al-Sistani, Husayn al-Sadr, Muhammad Sa'id al-Hakim, and Ishaq al-Fayyad. The source cautioned against a plan that was prepared in Tehran and that Muqtada al-Sadr's supporters may carry out against al-Sistani and the other religious authorities who oppose the Velayat-e Faqih and the establishment of a religious regime in Iraq.

Dozens injured as train derails in eastern Australia

SYDNEY, Australia (AP) — A passenger train derailed in eastern Australia early Tuesday, injuring more than 120 people as cars slammed into trees and plowed through nearby fields. Medical officials said it was a miracle nobody was killed.

The train, carrying 164 passengers and crew from Brisbane to the northern town of Cairns, careened off the tracks shortly after midnight, about 250 miles north of Brisbane, Queensland state police said.

Many passengers were likely sleeping when they were suddenly tossed around the carriages, they said. Some car almost slid onto the adjacent Bruce Highway, the major east coast road.

About 35 of the injured were being treated for serious injuries, hospital officials said.

It wasn’t immediately clear what caused the train to jump the tracks, and officials said an investigation was under way.

More specifically, it would take out anything electronic. That means on the battlefield it would take out computers, GPS, targeting, etc. It would essentially level the playing field for an low-tech army. EMP is one of the big dangers of atomic weapons (outside of murder-death-kill) and according to some stories is the reason the soviets kept so much of their equipment at a low-tech level - so it would operate after EMP devastated higher-level electronics.

Computer problems delay passengers at Tampa International Airport

TIA SPOKESPERSON BRENDA GEOGHAGAN:
"Nothing quite like this, this is unique."

TIA Spokesperson Brenda Geoghagan says the computer crash affected passengers on all US Airways flights, plus passengers on other airlines at Airside F, including American Airlines, British Airways, Cayman Airways and West Jet. Passengers from all of those airlines go through the same security checkpoint.

TIA SPOKESPERSON BRENDA GEOGHAGAN:
"With the computer system down, the US Airways people cannot check passengers against their no-fly lists, their selective lists so everyone has to go through like a double screening."

For much of the day, the line to catch the trams to Airside F, went the entire length of the terminal. Frequent fliers couldn't believe it....snip

My technical background is severely limited, but my guess is that any electronics not hardened against EMP is vulnerable in theory.

Interesting that the UBL tape talked about a 500 thousand dollar operation resulted in 500 billion dollars damage to the economy. I read somewhere that someone built a primitive FCG for about 500 dollars.

If you assume that AQ does not have a nuke (and I still think that is foolhardy), then this type of weapon would be up their alley. But it is not either/or.

9/11 was followed by anthrax. Attacks with weapons of mass disruption (like E-bombs) could be followed by attacks with weapons of mass destruction (or vice versa).

Hit once to disable the response and/or defenses.
Then hit again.

That was how we did Iraq the first time.

The first shot was a computer virus that disabled their radar net. Then the helicopters did their thing on the opening night of the war.

Reciprocity.

FYI...Hummmm this is from ATS.

Well, not necessarily. In fact, I flat out disagree, and here's why:
If you were a military strategist, and were planning carefully the delivery of a nuclear device, so many factors would have to be taken into consideration, and so many things would have to be in place to do it at the exact right moment and location, so as to maximize it's effects. In addition to that, according to source posts on here recently, there may be a lot more peripheal plans that need to be executed along with it, which would also affect greatly where and WHEN this was done. What I read was indeed scary, that they were planning 1) to set the nuke off, 2) to have crop dusters waiting to deliver smallpox, and 3) to have suicide bombers take out our vaccination manufacturing labs....ALL THIS AT THE SAME TIME.

Sure, who knows if it's true, but damn. Just damn.
