What is going on in FLORIDA...Post here.

Posted on 11/02/2004 6:08:43 AM PST by Bushite

(Miami) Okay...My wife is at a precinct in Northern Hialeah/Southern Opalocka (She is pushing for the construction Bonds for Dade County and of course working as my Mole........)

That area is 50/50 really....you have alot of middle class Cubans and middle class African Americans....

The NAACP is out front observing....

A Republican Poll Watcher told my wife that he can't figure out where the Dem GOTV is...they (NAACP) were expected to be at the opening of the polls with a Bus load and he was there early to wait for them....(They have not arrived...and the NAACP folks said that they will not bus in to that station.

Lines are long....some African Americans walked out off the lines and where confronted by the NAACP officials...some ugly words...the African Americans left...saying "AH...it's really not that important to vote this year."

My wife has been talking to a Black Lady that is working at the precinct and they got around to talking about who they were voting for and the Black Lady said that she was voting for Bush because "He's been okay...and I don't like Kerry, although Bush shouldn't have been there in the first place cuz Gore won Florida." For some reason...Al Gore is loved by African Americans...there is NO energy FOR Kerry in the African American community.

I voted about 7:45am in Merritt Island. (Votes about 3-2 Republican, maybe a little more). Had to stand in line about ten minutes before getting in. Never had to wait before. Line had thinned when I left. No African - Americans in line. Only white people. Didn't see either party's poll workers. Lady, not in police uniform, but with tag that read, "Deputy Sheriff," was at the front of the door. I had pre-read the 8 amendments, so I knew going in which ones to vote "Yes," to. So it took me merely three minutes. Only campaigners out front, and well out front of voting place, over 100 feet, were folks with signs for person running for local sheriff. There were no Kerry or Bush sign carrying people out front. Folks in line were friendly with each other, but just made small talk. Didn't hear anyone talking about the vote or the candidates. Very laid back.

The voters in my precinct normally turn out in a large percentage, and I know Polk's Supervisor of Elections is also projecting high turnout county wide. If so, great news for President Bush. I'm goign to talk to some of the folks around my office and see what their voting experience was like.

I was in Tallahassee over the weekend. My sister told me that the Democrats were busing students from Florida A&M (a predominately black university) and from a black section of town to the polls for early voting. The reason you're not seeing the lines is they may have already voted.

On a more hopeful note, I was in Atlanta last night and listened to a black radio station's afternoon talk show. The host was lamenting the fact that many blacks were voting for Bush over moral issues.

About one out of three male callers I heard were supporting the president. One blasted the host about her attitude that blacks should be monolithic and think the same.

Unfortunately, all female callers seemed to reflect the same-old, same-old. Still, I thought this was a positive development and potentially consistent with the assertions I've read that Bush may pick up 18% of the black vote.

Apparently, the pastors in several black churches over the weekend launched into sermons about the need to vote for morality consistent with black values (i.e., vote against unfettered abortion, vote against gay marriage, etc.). I haven't heard anything about this elsewhere. Interesting.

If, by some chance the GOP does break the Democrat lock on the black vote, this election is over.

"In Pensacola my wife was at work and saw people running around spraypainting Crosses over KEdwards signs." this is wrong .. 'our' side should NOT be doing that

Who says that Bush supporters were doing it? Most of the "hate-crime" vandalism that makes the media turns out to be perpetrated by people who want the other side to get in trouble.

I spent some time in that area -- don't underestimate the weight of the Zephyrhills and New Port Richey snowbird vote!

Just moved to St. Johns County, weather is nice. My wife and I will be bringing up the rear for Pres. Bush since we can't get to the polls until early evening. May God grant His blessing on this nation and also that this nation will never elect a person such as Kerry and his ilk again.

I have faith in God but my faith in the electorate is a total 180^.

"Al Gore is loved by African Americans.."

I'm not so sure that this is the case. Perhaps it is more like an (unrealized) investment. So many display their mental illnesses by their continued grief over the 2000 race.

At any rate, praise to your wife for her civic involvement!

Go Bush!

The Florida Secretary of State was just on TV promising that if a snowbird votes in Florida and in their home state -- they WILL be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law!

Good for her -- I don't care how senile, stupid, or devious the snowbirds claim that are, put them in jail if they double vote!

"If, by some chance the GOP does break the Democrat lock on the black vote, this election is over."

I agree, that would be an extremely positive development. I don't think anyone is expecting Bush to significantly exceed 20% of that voting group, but anything in the high teens would be a big improvement over 2000.

I live on the west side of Atlanta in a predominantly African-American neighborhood. The polls opened at 7am and when I got there at 6:30, there was already a substantial line. I checked my watch as I left the building and it was 8:15. This is my first time voting in this location, but 2 years ago, I walked right in during the middle of the day and had no wait. Of course, that was an "off year". Even taking that into consideration, it looks to me like turnout here will be very heavy.

At the polling station this morning there were Democrats for Bush all over the place. This one guy said "I despise him and think he's scary as hell. Doesnt mean Im not voting for him...he saved our asses since 9-11 who knows how many times...my wife and I hate Kerry more...just have to do it for Bush this time but the rest of the ticket is Dem."
