NO TV DAY: Our Revenge Against The MSM (Vanity)
Self | 2 Nov 04 | Self

Posted on 11/02/2004 2:46:38 AM PST by datura

After reading the scores of vanities and replies to threads regarding the blatantly treasonous actions of the MSM, I've yet to hear anyone mention a possible means of driving the stake through the heart of our nemesis.

So I'd like to make a proposal to everyone within the forum, in the hope that as a movement it wll catch on and gain some momentum. It's really quite simple, and at the same time it's even something that is good for all of us. What am I proposing?

"NO TV DAY"

Since the election will hopefully be over today, and tomorrow we'll get to see the river of tears from the left after their loss, we should be able to pick a date in the near future for our 24 hour boycott. I know that just having those of us in here refusing to power up our TVs for 24 hours won't be noticed by the MSM - at least not at first.

But there are side effects to leaving the TV off that many of us who never watch TV can attest to. These effects include - but are not limited to - spending quality time with your loved ones engaged in actual conversations, or having the time to actually live some of the values we grew up with. By keeping the kids away from the idiot box frees up their time to actually help around the house as well. Essentially, you gain freedom away from the box - your life doesn't revolve around what's on and when. You get to decide your life's schedule. Most importantly, being away from the box (even if just for 24 hours) allows you to begin deprogramming. Yes, deprogramming. To TV watchers, reading the words "TV Programming" merely means when things are scheduled on television. In reality, the programming has nothing to do with the television - it is merely the medium or tool used to do the programming. You, the viewer, are the one being programmed.

Here in the forum we all tend to think of ourselves as being independent thinkers, that the MSM doesn't put any thoughts into our minds, that we're unlike the dull-eyed mouth breathers of the liberal side of life. Sorry, not so fast there. While we definitely are better equipped in mental ability, we are not immune to the constant effects of TV. TV tells you (or worse yet your kids) what is cool or not cool, what they or you need to own to be cool, what you should think about nearly every subject, and what they think is the future of the world and America's place should be in this new world. If you have a TV on in your home - even just as "background noise" - you are being programmed. Many who read this thread will disagree vehemently with these assertions. These are the people most severely effected by their TV masters.

It's been almost 9 years since I've watched (or listened to) more than just a few minutes of TV. I become exposed to it in other people's homes on occasion, and it now seems unbelievable that I used to be your average American who constantly had the TV on. When going through the deprogramming it felt as it does when you are under water and rising to the surface. Your mind becomes less cluttered. Your thoughts are your own. You have things to talk about with others that don't relate to TV. Here in FR, reading threads that deal with TV personalities or what's on TV at the moment seems so silly for lack of a better word.

If you honestly believe in the 'new media', for its' integrity, for its' ability to disseminate news in a truthful way that is unbeatable for speed and adaptability, then why continue to support the Dan Rather's and the Tom Brokaw's? There's only one way to make them all completely irrelevant: TURN THEM OFF, AND LEAVE THEM OFF! All I'm asking is for us here in FR to start the movement to replace the MSM with the new media. I propose that we make the first try at a 24 hour boycott of TV this Friday.

I proposed a more active 'counterstrike' against the main stream media during the previous coup-plotters attempts, but it received little attention.

Perhaps thia might in accord with your intent.

Note that my intent is to strike back at the main stream media not their sponsers. By informing the sponsers that MSM ad dollars are not reaching them they will seek more effective venues. I received no response from Nielsen yet. I've also mailed letters to big ticket mfrs. autos, appliances, etc. to which I included a listing of magazine subscriptions. (in my case more than a dozen)

This latest public revelation by the MSM coup plotters as revealed by Drudge requires a massive response. Pondering that response lead me to consider how most quickly and effectively this might be achieved. Advertiser boycotts require relatively massive efforts as well as avoiding products that one might need to use in any case. Such boycotts are at heart intended to move advertising dollars away from the coup-plotters pocket books.

Here's an idea that might have some merit. Rather than reaching out to the advertisers reach out to the Nielsen Media ratings system. They are the ones that report the number of viewers based upon a mere 5000 households. It is these ratings that determine the the desired market shares and the cost of attendant advertising dollars.

I purpose that we e-mail, snail mail, telephone Nielsen to inform them that our housholds no longer watch any shows on a given network, that we have taken ourselves out of the market place for any advertisers on that network and that their dollars are therefore wasted. The advertisers will have to try to find another way of reaching us.

Consider that 5000 household viewing patterns determine the rates that networks can charge their advertisers perhaps 10,000 or more letters of independence just might shake these sob's out of their smug arrogance.

I assume that FReepers are for the most part among those most desired by advertisers so maybe we can have a quick effect.

I sugggest that any contacts be polite, giving the reasons, and maybe some market info, such sex, age group, profession, etc.

Just let them know we're not home whent they come calling.

Any thoughts?

Absolutely. My family had already decided not to watch.

So. It's the Rings trilogy all day today.

I can't decide if Kerry is Saruman or just a miserable orc.

The very best thing is for folks to just shut off their televisions for good. I did that two years ago and have never regretted it.

IMHO, turning off the tv for one day will not have any affect on the MSM. The only thing that the execs understand is the 'bottom line'. What needs to be done is a continued boycott of a given network. Pick one, any one, in a coordinated effort. Say CBS for example. Demand the termination of Dan Rather for starters. Also note to that network that any further biased reporting will result in a loss of income for them.

I find that FOX news is the least biased network and choose to watch that exclusively. The only time the alphabet channels are on my tv is as the tuner is passing over them.......

Friday sounds good to me.

IMHO, we do need an organized follow up boycott of some sort to hit them where it hurts. Lots of good ideas on this thread.

I turned off the tv all weekend through today. I will watch election results on FNC tonight.

I got tired of the constant DNC talking points in every show from news to drama's being parroted.

Since I moved out of of (ex)-wife's house 18 months ago, no TV. I don't have cable, and my TV antenna gets zero channels. I do listen to radio, Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, and (occasionally) Art Bell, although Bell's replacement had on a guest who claims the aliens support John sKerry, which explains why I don't listen much any more.

And FreeRepublic. I don't always agree with you guys and gals, but I'll defend to our deaths the right to keep talking. And acting. And, G-d forbid, more, should it come to that.

We need to do two things: support our own, and defund the Left. Put real teeth into campaign financing: cut federal spending by 50 percent or more. Then people won't *need* to pay as much attention to politics. Then cut spending by 50% again. Lather and repeat.

Maybe 5 freepers watching each network can monitor the MSM and the rest of us should vow not to even tune in, but tune into Free Republic for their expertise reporting on these louses.

This was a idea that ran through my mind the other day. BOYCOTT THE TV!!!!!!!!!!

Great idea! I actually was thinking of doing this anyway, simply because it has become unbearable to watch TV news.
I don't even want to watch elections tonight because of their stupid blabber. I hope the FR will provide good info on elections.

If the No TV Day were well publicized and then the Nielsen numbers showed it to be effective, advertisers would avoid putting their money into shows on that day. So we need to start with a day with the most egregiously leftist programing...a hard choice, I know. When that day had no ad buyers, we could extend it to another day of the week...guaranteeing to strike total fear into the left at the networks. I love it!

"Unless you are one of the approximately 26,000 Nielsen Families by which the media corporations judge the viewing "standards" (or lack thereof) of America, then no one will hear you as you turn off your TV in silence"

I think this is important for everyone to understand, unless you're a Neilsen Family, the networks don't know what you're watching or not!

I am content to have a small, long range impact: no TV for the long haul, no heinz as well...
If you worry about commitment, I think that that is a matter of individual character. Stubbornness runs in our family. On Christmas of 1988, TJMaxx had a disgusting commercial shown repeatedly between childrens Christmas specials. Due to that, I have to this day never spent a penny there. I will probably do the same with Heinz. As well as the Kerry factor, I now know that their foundation supports liberal causes. They may never know it, but every penny I spend on a competitor instead of on them speaks- or at least whispers- to their bottom line.
