Initial weather forecasts for Monday night and Tuesday show a reasonable chance of snow showers and snow for eastern New Mexico, which is the most Republican region of the state. Hopefully this will not be a repeat of 2000, when a snowstorm hit this region on election day, and likely prevented 366 Bush voters from getting to the polls.
If the snow is predicted for East NM, that could be bad. East NM suffers horrific ground blizzards, roads have to be closed. And, East NM is the republican part of the state.
I'd love to, but I don't think I could make it in time. Well maybe if I drove really really fast :) I'm in NC.
NM actually gets a lot of snow in some places. I remember when I lived there that on I-40 westbound in Albuquerque there was a billboard that showed the snow base at Taos. In mid May it was still 100+ inches. The moisture usually comes up across Texas from the Gulf moving east to west and as the elevation goes up it dumps the snow. That is why there is a lot of snow on the east side of the Sandias and almost no snow in Albuquerque proper on the west side.
Our first snow of the fall usually comes around Halloween in Eastern NM. It can be quite heavy in the mountain areas, but this time of year it is usually light in the plains. About 6 years ago I had over three feet on level portions of my back yard in January -- more in drifts. I remember waiting in line in the snow to vote 12 years ago (Santa Fe). Yes, there is snow forcast for portions of NM on election day.
The good news is northern NM (the democrat area) will probably get much more snow than the Republican southeastern area. Also, many of us Republicans have already voted.
No, the eastern part of the state is where the most Republican's live.
Living on ranch in the eastern plains. Nothing that will keep people home. Early voting is going over very big. I hope we have the votes to overturn Santa Fe Dems. Denco
Pick up a burger and shake from Pat's Twin Cronies, then head to Lubbock via Kakawate road.
Likely much better off with the NWS than the Weather Channel.

You can click on the map to get weather for any of the counties.
Anyway, looks like any precip would be Monday night (with Tuesday sunny and clear) and pretty limited.
Actually, due to some model shifts, really doesn't look like much precip in any swing states. The storm posited for MI/OH/PA has shifted south in model runs to dump most of their precip on guaranteed Bush states.
that would be a peanut butter shake

Ever hear the term broken glass Republicans?
You're about to see a real life demonstration...you already are in the huge early voting turnout in the states that are doing that.
I do not think Republicans in NM will let it happen again.
Don't forget Taos, Angelfire, Sandia and I think there's another one I'm forgetting right now. We are in the middle of the Rocky Mountains.
Arizona has high country, too!
I've been DYING to use that one!
Eastern New Mexico is an extension of the Texas Panhandle and we've all heard of the blizzards that can blow through there.
Yeah, I grew up in NE NM. Absentee voting is big. But, if the snow is bad, and they close the roads, a minimal # of people might not be able to vote. But, when you are talking 350 votes was the difference in the state.
I don't think the weather was the issue last election. There was a county that changed their vote count, giving several hundred votes to Gore.
There was also the problem with the people who did a straight party vote on absentee ballots; their votes weren't counted properly.
You are right,Eastern New Mexicans, are used to sand storms, droughts and other hard living. They wouldn't let a little snow keep them home, but just in case I will pray for clear weather. I have got to get off of this thread, I am getting homesick.
Actually, rural NM makes up 60% if NM's population. There are quite a few wealthy Republicans in north west NM and LOTS of Native Americans.
