State Department Tried to Stop Airing of Bin Laden Tape

WASHINGTON (AP) - The State Department on Friday urged the government of Qatar, which finances Al-Jazeera, not to broadcast a videotaped speech by Osama bin Laden, a senior State Department official said. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the State Department spoke to officials in Qatar before Al-Jazeera showed a portion of the tape. In it, the al-Qaida leader said the United States can avoid another attack if it stops threatening the security of Muslims.

The request to the Persian Gulf government, which is considered an ally in the U.S. campaign to counter terror, was passed through the U.S. embassy in Doha, Qatar's capital.

Secretary of State Colin Powell and other Bush administration officials have appeared in Al-Jazeera interviews, although the State Department has occasionally denounced the network as biased against the United States. The reason for going on these programs is to convey the U.S. message to the Arab world, the official said.

The media are the ones who are alarming. They have lost all sense of propriety for national security.

I was watching Shep also, and I was unnerved by what he was saying. I am still unnerved.

The State Department must not want Bush re-elected because I think this tape guarantees it.

For the first time in our nations history, the State Department is no longer under the control of the President. Weak President, or did the Constitution change?

I hesitate to establish (yet) another OBL tape thread. Probably best to wait and see if Fox follows up tomorrow with more reports from the DOD source(s)......

Believe it or not, Doe Eyes, not everyone in the State Department is a Republican or supports this administration. In reality, the number of political appointees a President can make is incredibly small and the number of employees who have career jobs protected from changes in an administration is incredibly large.

Please reconsider your snide remark by considering some facts.

Ok I'll wait, but I reread what you so carefully and fully transcribed and it is extremely frightening. Thank you for transcribing it and for answering me back.

Do you seriously believe that four years into Clintons term, we were saying, its not Clinton's fault, its those Bush holdovers at the State Department?

The State Department is under the Executive Branch, and the lack of control means a weak Executive Leader.

It could be that the release of a video of UBL would be the signal. Since the fall of the Taliban, and that last video with Al-Zahiri(sp?), he had only released audio tapes. He didn't even make a peep during the 9/11 anniversary. Very possiblely the go signal.

It wasn't until the second plane hit the second tower that it was obvious that this was a terrorist attack

I personally believe that THE reason for the 2 planes / 2 towers was that we had ignored other terrorists incidents (like flight 800) under the Clinton administration (choosing to say they were caused by something else). The Al-Qaeda leadership was determined to make a strike that could not possibly be written off as something else.

How many big jets in the US have crashed since we discovered th 'shoe bomber' and started watching that more closely???

Warning From Dept. of Justice, bin Laden Tape and Other Terrorist Tape Could Be a Signal For Attack...

...so could a Viagra spam sent to 30 million computers, a classified ad for a 1978 Ford Econoline in the Detroit Free Press, a mattress commercial on Rush....

Not real aware of how the government works, are you? Once you have passed a preliminary point in your employment, it's almost impossible to get fired.

The fact that the State Dept. didn't want it aired proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that the tape will help the President.

Of course there were 4 planes hijacked that morning...and they may have intended to hijack more but the other teams didn't succeed. The government's order to ground all planes immediately was very smart and may have prevented additional hijacking attempts.

If Kerry or Gore had been President in the fall of 2001, Osama's sanctuary in Afghanistan wouldn't have been touched. The MSM was convinced the war in Afghanistan was a hopeless quagmire a week after it got underway.

We had agreed with Mohammed Atta, may Allah bless his soul, to carry out all of the operations within 20 minutes, before Bush and his administration pays attention.

It never occurred to us that he, the commander in chief of the country, would leave 50,000 citizens in the two towers to face those horrors alone, because he thought listening to a child discussing her goats was more important.

The first statement sounds right for the terrorists, but the second one contradicts it and sounds like it came from the DUmp.

"haven't seen Fahrenheit 9/11"

Watch FahrenHYPE 9/11. BlkBstr has it for rent, or buy it. Great documentary. Explains Moore's crap without seeing it.

Moore made something of The President's initial response to the news that a second plane hit at the WTC. Today, so did OBL.

President Bush handled the situation honorably.

OBL, Mike Moore, Clinton, and John Kerry SUCK.

The Dems seem to forget that Clinton was offered OBL via Sudan around 1998. Clinton declined. Poor choice.
