BOSTON— Newly minted World Series hero Curt Schilling canceled a scheduled campaign appearance with President Bush on Friday, saying his doctors advised him not to travel because of his injured ankle.

An e-mailer identifying himself as the Boston Red Sox pitcher posted a message on the bostondirtdogs.com Web site saying, "I am now not medically cleared to do anything until I see Doc on Sunday, so I cannot travel with President Bush."

Schilling, who has been known to contribute frequently to online fan forums, did not immediately return a call from The Associated Press on Friday.

The pitcher endorsed Bush in an interview on ABC's "Good Morning America" Thursday, a day after the Red Sox won the franchise's first World Series championship in 86 years.

In his e-mail, Schilling said he should have kept his opinion to himself.

"While I am a Bush supporter, and I did vote for him with an absentee ballot, speaking as I did the other day was wrong. While I hope to see him re-elected, it's not my place, nor the time for me to offer up my political opinions unsolicited," he said.

Schilling turned in one of the most memorable performances in postseason history this year, winning Game 2 of the World Series and Game 6 of the American League Championship Series with his ankle sutured to protect a torn sheath around his Achilles' tendon.

If Bush wanted me to campaign with him, no doctor would ever stop me.

Would take more than a sprained ankle.

It sounds to me that the team manager or owner forbid him to go until the team doctor clears him, because he is under contract.

That would explain the medical excuse, but not the "It's not my place" comment. This is not a happy man.

wonder who slapped him down. Those are not the words of a happy man.

Just an anecdote excerpted from the Union Leader. vomit alert - Tom

N.H.USA - NASHUA - Democrats and Red Sox fans are all about keeping the faith these days.

So it is that Sox Chairman Tom Werner, who proudly wears both labels, has more than just one fall miracle on his mind. "I'm hoping for two things," Werner said at a Nashua rally yesterday for Sen. John Kerry, the Democratic Presidential nominee. "A parade in Boston in a few days, and an inaugural parade for John Kerry in January."snip

But baseball is the national pastime, Werner said. Next week's election is about the future, and Werner said he has some serious questions about the direction the country is taking under Kerry's rival, President Bush.

"I'm a parent. I have three children, and I am tremendously concerned, not just about their future, but about the future of our country," Werner said in an interview. "Anything I can do to articulate why I think John Kerry is an extraordinary person and deserves to be President, I'm happy to do."snip

"Just like the Red Sox when they were down 3-nothing (against the Yankees), you knew he could come back," Werner said.snip

"It's a cliche, but it actually does take 25 great individuals to win a ballgame, and it takes all of your support to make John Kerry a winner in New Hampshire," Werner said.

Werner, who hosted a fundraiser for Kerry last year, said he knows Kerry to be an intelligent and courageous person.

Kerry sat with Werner in the owner's box at a Red Sox-Yankees game in July, after Kerry surprised the crowd by throwing out the opening pitch. The ball hit the dirt in front of home plate, prompting some boos from the crowd.

Werner, who lives in California, rose to fame as an executive producer for several hit television shows, including "The Cosby Show," "Roseanne," and, more recently, "That 70's Show." He donated $2,000 to the Kerry campaign last year, and he's given away thousands of dollars to other Democrats over the years, according to opensecrets.org, an independent campaign finance Web site.

Aw come on! The area in which he lives is fairly Republican. There are some Republicans in Massachusetts,I had lunch with two of them yesterday in the town where Schilling lives.

Everyone points us to this thread and I am sure it is the primary reason; but other participants pointed out probably equally valid points as I read every post.

i.) Their may exist contractual limitations as well.

ii.) Katie Couric's boyfriend or husband is a partner owner in the Red Sox and campaigned for Kerry in Florida. If this is so, this is a valid point as well.

I hand it to Schilling, the Socialcrats were co-oping the Red Sox great achievement for their own cause and Kerry obviously is not up on Red Sox lore. Schilling probably still did enough by bolting from the pack.

I can just about guarantee you that the Red Sox have seen their one and only contract with Curt Schilling.

I'm a Sox fan and I could throw up this morning.

This is not about Curt, this is another case of the "elite" dictating to the people they view as the peons.

BDD makes photoshops for effect. He's not saying the pic is legit. Curt has a very active online persona. He takes his laptop everywhere he goes.

Pedro promised in an interview he's not going to the Yankees even if he doesn't resign. He can't stand Posada. And you can't have a starter and a catcher who'd like to bludgeon one another.

Strongarming

To me the Kerry campaign has shown a strongarming technique for all to see and this could hurt the campaign, baseball is the American Passtime or is called that at least.

We've got the Kerry campaign going to lawyers about the swift boat ad and then, the Sinclair movie meeting legal challenges too. They have quashed freedom of speech. This should not be seen as anything positive for them at all.

It's all about the Benjamin's, folks. I'm guessing his agent got to him and said he'd lose out on a lot of endorsements if he didn't shut his mouth.
