Bill was takin' a trip back to A-R-K,
Toolin' along in his Cabriolet,
Tokin' on a number and diggin' on the radio.
Just as he crossed that ol' Virginny line,
He heard that highway start to whine,

He called up dead's station down the road aways,

It's an odd contention, since I never even would have heard of the Minuteman project if not for FR. A quick search shows three articles in the last three days on the project, with over 1,000 responses. That's some banned topic!

We've got a whole new crop of anti-FReepers brewing over there, and this time it is on account of the alleged FReeper Thread Nazis who supposedly support Dubyuh's Non-Amnesty Amnesty Program fer ILLEGALS. Much of their argument is baseless, imho, although I have witnessed a MOD bias in favor of allowing Pro-ILLEGALS to label anti-ILLEGALS as "Racists", "Nazis" and worse...perhaps we do need to keep an eye on said bias in the future.

One needn’t be a racist to be anti-immigration by any means, but if you are a racist, you’re anti-immigration almost by default.

I believe it is very important that we distinguish between being anti-immigration and being anti-ILLEGALimmigration. Personally, I believe the desire of non-Americans to live and work and grow within our shores is a great compliment and a blessing to our future as a Nation. However, ILLEGALimmigration is a BLIGHT against our Country, and causes untold damage to our society...and must be STOPPED!!
Those who have broken this Country's laws deserve no preference whatsoever above those who have faithfully and lawfully pursued American citizenship through the proper channels...there must be NO AMNESTY fer the scofflaws!! And that should include unscrupulous businesses that hire ILLEGAL aliens!!

Thanks, Steve. As for the optimism/pessimism thing, it appears that it’s always been that way, and may always be so. What’s more important, though, isn’t your and my view of the future of this republic, but rather our willingness to do what is within our power to reclaim her, and our envisioned portrait of her once the reclamation is complete. There I believe we share the same vision. :)
Thanks for the link to the Sandy Berger article on the other thread. ‘Mishandling documents/misdemeanor’ my eye. Despite the actual severity of his crime -- obstruction of justice, flavored, perhaps, with at least the scent of treason? -- I believe he will receive a punishment that will make the proverbial slap on the wrist seem cruel and unusual. The Bush administration showed class in not focusing on much of what their predecessors physically did to the White House before vacating, but they are letting us all down (understatement of the century) by not prosecuting their major crimes to the extent they deserve.
There is no way that the premeditated stealing of immensely important implicating documents equates to ‘mishandling’. I have always been under the (apparently false) impression that ‘mishandling’ (in the legal sense) equated to ‘accidentally’ or ‘unintentionally’ placing classified documents in a place from which they could be compromised. Those ‘mishandled’ documents had implications that would have blackened the reputations of (not to mention possibly resulting in hefty jail sentences for) countless Clinton administration criminals (forgive the redundancy) – not to mention shedding light on the long-term vulnerability to us all that their ineptness/self-enriching criminality caused.
Sedition and treason have become convenient tools for some democrats (sedition is even regularly committed right on the house and/or senate floor), and republicans have yet to hold them accountable for their potentially lethal actions. One such democrat stands at least an even chance of inheriting the White House in 2008.
Kinda makes you wince, no?
The bottom line in this whole smarmy affair is that we will never know what Berger (under orders from others) stole … or precisely why. And that is no small matter, both in explaining past failures to ensure our national security, or in knowing in whom we should be placing our trust in future elections/appointments.
American justice is on the endangered species list, if not already extinct. (If that’s an example of ‘pessimism’, I readily and emphatically plead guilty.)
P.S. Ask the average American man on the street what he thinks of what Berger did, and I guarantee that seventy percent of them won’t even know what you’re talking about. More than the threat of terrorism, more than the incremental corruption of our own politicians, that kind of apathetic voluntary ignorance of the citizenry is what is predicating the demise of this republic. And the first-class ruling elite consistently bank on that ignorance.
