Life in the People's Republic of Illinois (just when I needed a laugh)
Me!

Posted on 10/27/2004 12:43:10 PM PDT by Baulkin

Living in the people's republic of Illinois can get rough some days, living across the river from Davenport gives me an oppurtunity to see most of the presidental canidates but the press here is just horrible. The evening news is like opening the New York times... then my friend got this in the mail, scanned it and sent it to me...this just made me laugh.

Evans will be re-elected until he pulls out on his own, someday.

Yes things seldom change around here. I'm convinced the reason this area lags behind economically and commercially is because of the higher taxes imposed on business and the utter lack of leadership from our congress people. We have a very good workforce able to do great things. We are community several hundred thousand people strong and yet things seldom change for the better.

We have NO major 4 year university in the Quad Cities. Sure WIU has a QC extension but unless your major is education or business you have to go to Macomb (90 minutes away) or the University of Iowa or pay the private school tuition of St. Ambrose or Augusatana college. That is just one example of leadership lacking.

Another example is the lack of support for the Rock Island Arsenal...something Lane Evans could easily support and influence. But he would rather battle the Defense Department and oppose Bush than support the QC residents.

Oh well...vent over.

"But they believe 1 thing that overrides everything else...they believe Republicans are only for the rich and the Democrats are for the working guy..the small guy. That's it."

You know, I was thinking... it's that kind of thinking that has been stifling growth in the QC for years. It's a prime location for tourism and even commerce with the river. People have got to look at who they keep electing on the local level year after year...Democrats. They are always cutting this and that but taxes like property taxes continue to rise. We finally had to move because my husband's company closed and he couldn't find comparable work (he's a techie).

Another factor is the large senior pop. that always votes Dem because they always have, regardless of who the candidate is. The buy into that SS scare tactice crap.

The yellow ribbon thing - I live in downstate Illinois and these yellow ribbon magnet things are everywhere - especially on minivans. We have a variety of yellow ones and even red, white and blue ones - they are for sale in absolutely evey gas station/convenient store. The thing I don't like about them is - whenever I've checked out the packaging - nowhere on any of them does it say any portion of the proceeds goes to the troops or their support - so I'll assume nothing does. Who's making all the money off these things?

When I find one that gives the $$$ to the troops - I"ll buy one.

I'm guessing that the content of the letter is posted in reply #1. Too bad it won't open for me. Am I the only one having this problem?

As those of us conservatives from here say, "Boulder is 26 square miles surrounded by reality."

Welcome to Colorado!

Yep. Another thing--the old Unions. Deere, IH, Cat etc...had a HUGE workforce in the QC's and had such a strong union influence. That union influence is no longer there as the union jobs have largely dried up..but the union mentality and ideology hasn't.

Ironic--the Union couldn't keep the QC economy strong. The union couldn't keep the job. The union kept encouraging the re-election of democrat officials...and what do we have to show for it?? NADA!

Yep, ignorance in routine will cost ya big time. That is what we have in the QC's. In reality the QC's are much like black Americans...highly relied upon and too often neglected by the Democrat party.

I live south of the qc about 120 miles and those yellow ribbons are all over on cars down here. There are lots of them over in Keokuk also even though it is very democrat in se ia. If those people who have the yellow ribbons on their cars really support our troops they will all vote for bush

"I like the ribbons personally, I dont see anything wrong with them. I think it's sorta funny that kids are stealing them and reselling them in the Quad Cities because there is a good market for them *chuckle*

Maybe a kid will sell me one. I've noticed these in other states, and the last few days here in Chicago (of all places). I don't think anybody here is selling them yet. Next time I see one, maybe I'll do a " Florida Indimidation" maneuver to get them to stop and tell me where they got it. I have a kid in Iraq and no ribbon on my car. Pathetic, huh?

It'll work if I hit refresh a few times, but hit and miss. This is weird. We QC folk carry a strange aura with us! LOL!

Social security scare tactics AND double scare for medicare. For some reason the seniors around here think their prescription payments are going to disappear because of Bush.

My sentiments on the yellow ribbons as well. I ask vendors if the troops get anything and they don't know.
