There are four things I don't want the UN to touch.. Our country, our military, space, and the oceans.

I predict that this UN org will start issuing decrees now that someone won the X Prize.
Until now "manned commerical space flight" was really someone renting out payload space on an existing governmental space program. Now that corporations / individuals have a self-sufficient manned space program, that cannot be permited without some level of governmental and / or UN interference.

I'm about to write a negative letter to our local paper about the UN-American UN. All suggestions will be welcomed.

They probably want China to dominate the space.

After the election we should find a way to get out the UN Space Treaty.

An outer space affair would be illogical due to the expense of the trips.

Watch. They'll be taking bribes from the Klingons next. Klingons are poor warlords. Ferengi have piles of gold-pressed latinum for bribing

Good luck... You could write a Sunday editions worth of letters on that subject. Everything from the gun tax, to the ocean resources treaty, to economic sanctions busting, and a lack of compassion for those who are oppressed.

The Air Force and NRO (National Reconnaissance Office) and not UN should handle all our negotiations and deals with those extraterrestrials...
Isn't that what's it's all about??? ;)

Now that corporations / individuals have a self-sufficient manned space program, that cannot be permited without some level of governmental and / or UN interference. My thoughts exactly. I'm sure somebody will bring up the "what if terrorists got access to this technology" argument, in order to heavily regulate this.
To: Wooley
This non-governmental organization exists to keep a book with the names and orbits of artificial satellites that the party that launched deems to tell them about. They are taking every document that even looks like a space treaty as justification for their existence. Same kind of thing is happening throughout the UN and the EU and wherever authoritarians congregate.
We must never have dealings with this NGO. Sooner or later this creeping sovereignty will have gone too far and then Attila the Hun will have a couple of busy years cleaning up the mess.

Per Treaty, the US must regulate private space enterprises originating on its territory.

That is, it is not a matter of some power elite wanting to control something, it has been codified over 35 years. Since the height of the Cold War.
