United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UN-OOSA)
Astromart ^ | 10/18/2004 | Paul Walsh

Posted on 10/23/2004 4:35:13 AM PDT by Wooley

The Office for Outer Space Affairs was initially created as a small expert unit within the Secretariat to service the ad hoc Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space established by the General Assembly in its resolution 1348 (XIII) of 13 December 1958. It became a unit within the Department of Political and Security Council Affairs in 1962, when the permanent Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space met for the first time, and was transformed into the Outer Space Affairs Division of that Department in 1968. In 1992, the Division was transformed into the Office for Outer Space Affairs within the Department for Political Affairs. In 1993, the Office was relocated to the United Nations Office at Vienna. At that time, the Office also assumed responsibility for substantive secretariat services to the Legal Subcommittee, which had previously been provided by the Office of Legal Affairs in New York. Questions relating to the militarization of outer space are dealt by the Conference on Disarmament, based in Geneva.

The Office for Outer Space Affairs implements the decisions of the General Assembly and of the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space. The office has the dual objective of supporting the intergovernmental discussions in the Committee and its Scientific and Technical Subcommittee (S&T) and Legal Subcommittee, and of assisting developing countries in using space technology for development. In addition, it follows legal, scientific and technical developments relating to space activities, technology and applications in order to provide technical information and advice to Member States, international organizations and other United Nations offices.

There are four things I don't want the UN to touch.. Our country, our military, space, and the oceans.

I predict that this UN org will start issuing decrees now that someone won the X Prize.

Until now "manned commerical space flight" was really someone renting out payload space on an existing governmental space program. Now that corporations / individuals have a self-sufficient manned space program, that cannot be permited without some level of governmental and / or UN interference.

I'm about to write a negative letter to our local paper about the UN-American UN. All suggestions will be welcomed.

They probably want China to dominate the space.

After the election we should find a way to get out the UN Space Treaty.

An outer space affair would be illogical due to the expense of the trips.

Klingons are poor warlords. Ferengi have piles of gold-pressed latinum for bribing

Ferengi Rule of Acquisition #020 » Only give money to people you know you can steal from.

Good luck... You could write a Sunday editions worth of letters on that subject. Everything from the gun tax, to the ocean resources treaty, to economic sanctions busting, and a lack of compassion for those who are oppressed.

The Air Force and NRO (National Reconnaissance Office) and not UN should handle all our negotiations and deals with those extraterrestrials...

Isn't that what's it's all about??? ;)

My thoughts exactly. I'm sure somebody will bring up the "what if terrorists got access to this technology" argument, in order to heavily regulate this.

This non-governmental organization exists to keep a book with the names and orbits of artificial satellites that the party that launched deems to tell them about. They are taking every document that even looks like a space treaty as justification for their existence. Same kind of thing is happening throughout the UN and the EU and wherever authoritarians congregate.

We must never have dealings with this NGO. Sooner or later this creeping sovereignty will have gone too far and then Attila the Hun will have a couple of busy years cleaning up the mess.

Per Treaty, the US must regulate private space enterprises originating on its territory.

That is, it is not a matter of some power elite wanting to control something, it has been codified over 35 years. Since the height of the Cold War.
