WASHINGTON, Oct. 20 (UPI) -- Former U.S. President Bill Clinton has set his sights on becoming U.N. secretary-general. A Clinton insider and a senior U.N. source have told United Press International the 56-year-old former president would like to be named leader of the world body when Kofi Annan's term ends early in 2006.
"He definitely wants to do it," the Clinton insider said this week.
A Clinton candidacy is likely to receive overwhelming support from U.N. member states, particularly the Third World. Diplomats in Washington say Clinton would galvanize the United Nations and give an enormous boost to its prestige. But the former president's hopes hang on a crucial question that will not be addressed until after the presidential elections: can he get the support of the U.S. government -- a prerequisite for nomination?
The political wisdom is that a second George W. Bush presidency would cut him off at the pass. The notion of Clinton looming large in the international arena from "the glass tower" in New York would be intolerable to the Bush White House. If Democratic candidate, Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., wins on Nov. 2 the prospect of Clinton as secretary-general won't exactly be welcome either, but Kerry would find it much harder -- if not impossible -- to go against it.

Are they kidding or are they series?
Yeah, but he doesn't have a blue turban either....
Two conspiracy theories:
1. Clinton's using reverse psychology. He's trying to make people think that if Kerry's elected, he will get this position. That way people will flee Kerry in droves.
2. The DNC put up Kerry as their candidate in order to make Hillary look moderate in 2008.
One more thing, he's let this come out to steal Kerry's oxygen. :-)
"Do we really think the UN (that idolizes Klinton) would not change that rule to allow this?"
I have no doubt, but would the US agree? (It's an awful thought.)
When did rules ever apply to the Clintons? They have bent and twisted so many, there is shrapnel everywhere!
Yep after WWII, the permanent members were the main Allied nations, of which France was a member (whether they deserved it, is a whole other matter).
I think part of it is just a knee-jerk desire to have some1 lefty to worship like Reagan was. Plus he managed 2 terms, that must mean he's real popular like Reagan, right? (Never mind Perot digging big time into the votes so Clinton won w/minorities both times.)
But of course, I do think it's partly sickness - esp. of amoral people (as so many libs are, that defines their stances) to have some1 who says it's OK to be sickly amoral like he is.
Bill Clinton wants to be Head of UN ^.....
Bill Clinton to wear Burka....
/sarcasm
I can't find anything in the U.N. Charter about it. Here is the link to the secretary general's qualifications according to the charter.

I would definitely be a disaster.
The EU is already trying to take over, what a setback it would be if the UN President was an American, any American. So even if it wasn't against the rules, the 4 other permanent members would never allow it, just like we would never allow any of their citizens to take over.
Maybe Clinton could run the "oil for starving and dead children" program. We know he's got the integrity for the top UN position and he'll fit right in...
Russia would veto it in a heartbeat, they will never forgive Clinton for bombing their Serb brothers.
Imagine that Bill Clinton is SecGen and Hillary runs in 4 years. The UN will pull no punches in getting Hillary elected. Hill and Bill WILL sell the sovereignty of the United States to the UN. And that is the ultimate prize.
So yes, Russia will go along with this. As well as China, Germany and France.
This has been his plan since 2000 and probably before. It's not a secret.
He'd need a new title too. How about Horndog General ?
I knew that the slickmeister wouldn't be able to stay out of the limelight and I also knew that this was why he was so busy divesting the US of its sovereignty and handing it over to the UN. When viewed in that context, it makes perfect sense.
Buy that man a kaftan, and a cute little hat.
I (and plenty of others) saw this coming years ago. Him leading the UN. Hillary leading the USA. They rule the world.

This from the Organization that came within a hairs breath of selecting Mexico's leftist ex-president Luis Echevarrio as Secretary General in 1982 (he was beaten by the Peruvian slimeball Cuellar--can't remember how to spell his name), despite having the full knowledge of Luis' involvement in the massacre of 25 opposition protestors in 1971.
The orchestrator of the Waco massacre should be right up the U.N.'s alley.
> I thought the Secretary General cannot be from a permanent
> member of the Security Council, thus he is ineligible.
Easily resolved. Clinton can renounce his citizenship, or
the US can resign from the UN (and kick it out of the US),
or both.
