NEW LONDON, N.H. - Laura Bush said Thursday that Teresa Heinz Kerry didn't need to apologize for saying she couldn't remember whether the first lady had ever had "a real job."
"She apologized but she didn't even really need to apologize," Mrs. Bush told reporters at a coffee shop before attending a rally for President Bush (news - web sites). "I know how tough it is and actually I know those trick questions."
USA Today had asked Heinz Kerry, the wife of Democratic candidate John Kerry (news - web sites), if she would be different from Mrs. Bush as a first lady.
"Well, you know, I don't know Laura Bush. But she seems to be calm, and she has a sparkle in her eye, which is good," Heinz Kerry said in the interview published Wednesday. "But I don't know that she's ever had a real job - I mean, since she's been grown up. So her experience and her validation comes from important things, but different things."
Heinz Kerry later said she had forgotten that Mrs. Bush had worked as a teacher and librarian. "There couldn't be a more important job than teaching our children," she said in a statement. "As someone who has been both a full-time mom and full-time in work force, I know we all have valuable experiences that shape who we are. I appreciate and honor Mrs. Bush's service to the country as first lady and am sincerely sorry I had not remembered her important work in the past."
Bush adviser Karen Hughes later criticized Heinz Kerry twice - first for remarks "indicative of an unfortunate mind-set that seeks to divide women based on who works at home and who works outside the home" and later for an apology she called "worse because she left out the very important real job of a mother."
Laura is NOT way too nice....she's what Class is all about. A lot of girls USED to be raised that way. Sadly, we have lost that.
Good point! Last time I've seen this much class was (at the VP debate) when VP Cheney "thanked" Edwards for the comments he made about his family - right after Edwards had to add "gay" to the description of his daughter, Mary.
Rush just played the audio of Charles Krauthammer from yesterday's Brit roundtable.
Krauthammer said the WH should accept the "apology" (though I think it is perfect having Karen Hughes make her statements and classy Laura rise above it) but he, Charles, didn't have to and he then went on to slam Heinz-Kerry for her "plantation mentality".
Indeed, like the reference to Mary Cheney, those who whine about "these arent' the important issues" miss that these comments from the Kerry Kamp betray a real character deficit issue going on there and that is what is going to strike the American people as completely repellent. (and it is having an effect....Big Time)
Regardless of who wins on Election Day, George W. Bush will be turning in each night with Lovely Laura Bush, and John F. Kerry will be turning in each night with THK and her fright-wig. Sucks to be Kerry.
Teresa = no class
Laura = major, major class
Laura Bush has what Heinz-Kerry can't buy with her billion plus dollars, CLASS!
Very nice.
Laura gets to appear gracious and classy (not hard, considering...)
And the story gets extended another day.
You nailed it. They set a good example and it is a wonderful thing.
Let's all be thankful that Teresa changed from Republican to Democrat for this election!!!! She is the Epitome of a Limousine Liberal!!
That made me chuckle. There's always the "God love her (because I sure don't)", too.
Both the president and Laura really respect the office of president. They are extremely classy people and being representatives of the highest office determines how they respond daily.
Dubya got a good one that is certain.
The first lady has too much class and smarts to get pulled into such a chicken sh*t issue. Karen Hughes should learn something from her. It only makes the GOP look small by even discussing it. They should shrug it off. The voters have heard of the remark and there is no need to play on it, in fact it would be better not to.

Yeah, a real TRICK question -- how are you different than Mrs. Bush. I am sure Ms. Shove IT! hasn't heard that one before.
Grace, class, and style. That's what Laura has.
:) Y'know, I was going to post to this thread and make some sort of comment about how Laura Bush has a lot of class...! Talk about bringing coal to Newcastle!
BTW, Ann Archy: I like your .sig!
One has class.......the other's an *ss.
It is because of the great respect they have for the Office of President of the United States and the role of First Lady.
"John F. Kerry will be turning in each night with THK and her fright-wig."
They SO deserve each other.
She is so pretty.
