I love the way they've phrased the questions! Can anyone really have said 'yes' the way they've done it?

John Kerry and wife Teresa had a combined income of $6.8 million last year and paid $725,000 in taxes giving them a tax rate of 12.8 percent. Is this fair?

Yes -- Special, important people should pay a special low rate.
19.6%

No -- That's disgraceful. The average American pays a 20 percent tax rate.

The very rich buy state and municipal bonds that finance important infrastructure projects such as schools, water and sewers.

For that risk they earn a modest tax free return.

We want more rich people in this country to invest more of their money..

Someday I hope to be able to invest a portion of my savings in tax free bonds too.

That's not precisely true. THe average American doesn't pay 20%.

Well, what about the "stupid" tax they didn't pay?

Ever see anyone walk up to an elevator and push the up button when it's already lit?

Okay, buddy, two bucks. What, you never heard of it?
4 bucks.

What ever happened to audits? How can Kerry ask people who make over $200k pay more in taxes when he can't even pay his fair share at the lower rate? I saw on Fox today that a person who makes $205k will actually take home $5 less than a person making $195k. The point of this is, if you are a S-Corp paying individual tax rates, don't make your business any better than $195k and don't hire anyone additional. If business becomes too good start laying people off.

Well, I voted "no," but now I'm having second thoughts. After all, John and Teresa ARE special, important people. They are far above peons like us. Their blood is blue. Their taste in spandex bicycle shorts is exquisite.

The real question should not be one of "fair-ness"; it's too subjective and will only start arguements.

The real question is: does the current US tax law support the kerry tax return? If it does, then the real problem is not one of "fair", but one of changing the tax laws.

And since it's the rich folk that make those laws, any changes benefitting the "less fortunate" amongst us is highly unlikely.

Read it and weep.

I can't believe that when I voted that it was a "disgrace" 42% thought "special people" should get a break!
