I think the reason her weight is brought up is for the same reason that Kerry brought up Mary Cheney.
Mary Cheney herself had nothing to do with the question that was asked, he just "used" her for political reasons. It was a distraction from the issue that the question was about.

We have listened to these sanctimonious candidates accuse Bush of every sin in the book and we are just venting some of the frustration. Besides, she knew her husband was going to be campaigning, doesn't she have enough self-control to get herself in shape to be representing the party?
