Kerry: Bush January surprise for Social Security

COLUMBUS, Ohio (Reuters) - If re-elected, President Bush (news - web sites) plans a "big January surprise" and will move quickly to allow some private Social Security (news - web sites) accounts that will reduce benefits for retirees and swell the U.S. deficit, Democratic Sen. The good news is that Bush is going to be following behind Kerry in all of these states - maybe he can clean up his trail of lies to the older folks --My mom is 74 and know that Kerry is a scumbucket liar (her words)

I'm not a big fan of the various commercial polls, but I do put a little more credence in the campaign's private polls. You can always tell when a candidate has poll data that doesn't look good for him. This is a perfect example.

The problem with using Social Security to scare older people is that it works.

Not necessarily. In the midst of all the confusion surrounding the Florida debacle in 2000, most people overlooked the fact that Bush actually beat Gore among seniors -- a cohort that has long been a strong supporter of Democratic nanny-state politics.
