In a face-to-face encounter with John Kerry's daughter Alexandra, gutsy Liz Cheney demanded an apology on Saturday for Kerry's decision to publicly identify her sister Mary as "a lesbian" to a presidential debate audience of millions.
Sitting right next to Alexandra while the two guested on ABC's "Good Morning America," the married mother of four said a Kerry apology "would be appropriate."
But Alexandra didn't stray from the Kerry campaign's edict that Mary Cheney's sexuality is "fair game," telling the Liz, "when you choose to be part of a campaign, you choose to make yourself public." The day before, top White House aide Mary Matalin also suggested it was time for Kerry to apologize - but so far the top Democrat refuses to acknowledge he was wrong.
The reaction to Kerry's "lesbian" outburst - and the way his campaign has mishandled it - has been overwhelmingly negative, with polls showing that, by a margin of two-to-one, Americans think he was wrong to "out" Cheney in Wednesday night's debate.
Some pundits thought that the gay-baiting ploy could be politically fatal, with WABC Radio's Monica Crowley flatly predicting on Saturday that it could "cost Kerry the election."
Even the Christian right - who team Kerry thought would be turned off to learn that a member of President Bush's political family is gay - has rallied to Mary Cheney's defense.
Columnist Zef Chafets noted in Sunday's New York Daily News, "Well-known political preachers like Jerry Falwell and James Dobson have gone out of their way to defend her right to privacy. Conservative radio talk shows and Web sites have been flooded with denunciations of Kerry and support for Mary."
Yes, that was the daughter with the see thru frock at the Cannes Festival.
The dems don't get the big picture at all.
I challenge the press to go dig the dirt on all the above mentioned people.
I'm really puzzled...
1. We all knew Mary was a lesbian since before the 2000 election.
2. We don't think that is particularly important, certainly not to the election itself.
3. Our indifference to her sexual orientation is well documented in the public record.
HOW could the Dims have been so incredibly stupid as to miss these facts?
Exactly. I must say I am VERY glad that the controversy after the debate has been on this statement by Kerry, not the President's "exaggerations" statement. The Mary Cheney thing has done more than we could have hoped for, and I say let the campaign get back to terrorism.
Glad you saved that pic. I'll never forget seeing that on Drudge!
Words fail me.
I'm a conservative Christian, and have known about Mary since the 2000 convention also. Having been informed by the MSM who made a point of it then, too. It did not affect my vote then, nor will it now.
It just shows me how dispicable the Dimz are. Cahill saying Mary was 'fair game' blew whatever cover sKerry tried to use later.
I know this pic is not long for the fr world, but in this context I believe it to be completely appropriate. I respectfully request that it be allowed to remain. This is exactly the kind of "fair game" that the Bush campaign could play, but chooses not.
The issue has the Kerry campaign off their talking points and onto unscripted territory.
Some Dems are saying that the reference to Liz Cheyney was simply congratulatory while others, like Kerry's daughter are following the "fair game" line.
Either way is a loser in most people's opinion.
Ah, the disadvantages of online dating!
OOOH. I hope Lynne Cheney keeps going strong about privacy issues.
When a marriage is annulled in the Catholic church it simply means that the sacrament was a mistake only in the eyes of the church. The children are still legally legitimate in the civil sense. They are not bastards.
Ms. Edwards ought to look in the mirror at her ample girth for some 'shame'......too much time at Wendy's.
David Brenner look-alike.
amen to that pal!!
where've you been?? I missed your posting :)
I wish Liz had said to Alexandra, "So you're admitting that your father's campaign is using my sister's sexual orientation for their political gain."
In essence, by the Kerry camp taking the "she's fair game" stance, they are admitting that when Edwards and Kerry both mentioned her, they were NOT doing it out of compassion and understanding, but using her as game in their bid for power.
Kerry's real statement: "And I think if you were to talk to Dick Cheney's my daughter, who is a lesbian slut she would tell you she's being who she was, she's being who she was born as has chosen to be"
Alexandra Kerry, please keep those ugly flap-jacks covered up for eternity.
