Shiffer: I got more e-mail this week than any other question. I'm told that 8 million illegals cross our borders every year. WHat should we do about it.
Bush: I see it as a security issue, an economic issue, and a human rights issue. We have more border patrol agents. Using new equipment. Unmanned vehicles. A subject I'm very familiar with.
Many people come here for economic reasons. In order to make the borders more secure, we should have a worker program as long as there's not an American willing to do the job. That has the benefit of making sure our employers aren't breaking the law and that people are humanely treated and not kept in the shadows of society. It also means that it takes pressure off the border. If they have a card, they won't have to sneak across the border.
I don't think we should have amnesty and reward iillegal behavior.
Kerry voted for amnesty!
I bet his maids are illegals.
Good answer, Mr. President.
