Lottery winner shot to death by Seattle police
Houston Chronicle ^ | Associated Press

SEATTLE -- A man shot to death by police outside a football stadium has been identified by his family as one of the winners of an $87 million lottery jackpot.

Rick Camat, 32, was shot early Sunday as dozens of people fled to avoid a fight outside a bar before a St. Louis Rams-Seattle Seahawks game.

Police alleged that Camat was carrying a handgun and fired at a car that was leaving the area. Authorities said he crouched behind another vehicle and pointed a handgun at officers.

Relatives insisted Camat only fired into the air to break up the fight and said officers never issued a warning before shooting him.

"He shot once in the air to scare people away. He didn't aim it at anyone," said Camat's brother, Brian, who was with him at the time.

Officer Debra Brown said the family's account "differs vastly from the statements of dozens of witnesses who were at the scene that evening."

The officer who fired at Camat remains on paid administrative leave. An internal police review and a court inquest are planned.

Camat was one of 13 Starbucks employees in Los Angeles who shared an $87 million California lottery jackpot in 2000.

He recently bought a house in Federal Way, a suburb between Seattle and Tacoma, relatives said. He previously used his share of the lottery winnings to buy a house for his mother and cars for his siblings.

I am saying, compared to CA, it is easy to get a CCW in WA.

Now, reading that this guy was an ex gang banger, he might have arrests which would have disqualified him during the background check.

I am sure it will come out.

Yippee Ki Yeah!

I just can't feel sorry for the guy, what he did was just plain stupid.

What his family said he did is just plain stupid. In reality he probably did something even stupider, though -- like doing what the cops say he did.

Hate to say it, but it almost sounds like the family's looking to win a second lottery....

I'm sorry, but when you start firing a gun, unprovoked, in public, you lose your status as a "Lottery Winner" and become an "Armed Assailant".

She fronted the money for several absent workers, but didn't hesitate to split the jackpot 13 ways.

I like her.

no worries =) I figured as much.

I do think your right in that he probably blew the winnings no matter how much he won.

No way was this guy smart enough to invest in his future.

We're talking about Liberal Seattle here. Liberals are against gun ownership by default.

Washington is a "shall issue" state for residents AND non-residents.

Then divided by 13 = $380k. Taxes would reduce it to maybe $220k.

You're off by a factor of 10.

Lump sum, including taxes, comes out at about 40% of the total, and divided by 13 leaves about $2.7 million.

I used the same math that Kerry does to balance to budget.

Money can't buy you brains.

I suppose. But I bet he had a nice gun to point at the cops.

Lawyers, Guns & Money - Warren Zevon

Well, I went home with the waitress
The way I always do
How was I to know
She was with the Russians, too

I was gambling in Havana
I took a little risk
Send lawyers, guns and money
Dad, get me out of this

I'm the innocent bystander
Somehow I got stuck
Between the rock and the hard place
And I'm down on my luck

And I'm down on my luck
And I'm down on my luck

Now I'm hiding in Honduras
I'm a desperate man
Send lawyers, guns and money
The shit has hit the fan

Send lawyers, guns and money...

move that decimal over a bit.

It doesn't matter that my post was false, the story is true. I stand by my story and there will be no investigation and I will not apologize.
