NEW YORK -- The gloom of seeing their ace bounced after just three innings, his shortest outing in three years, was worsened by the knowledge that the Curt Schilling who had carried them all season might not be seen again this October.

the reason they were "jacked" was your boy Shilling ate his words. They can't wait to see him again in this series and he knows it.
And may I remind you of the RedSox FAILED attempt to buy a world series when they let A-Rod go.
We'll see about Pedro tonight and what his uniform looks like next year.
Yeah, Ok. You speek for all of America.
The fact is, yes the Sox have a 130M payroll, which is 2/3 of the Yankees payroll, so of course they (Yanks) are going to BUY their way to another shot at the world series (which worked out real well for them last year, by the way).
Yes, the Sox are also big spenders in a big market. Blame the Yankees for that. However, no-one else in this league has much of a chance because of the Yankees deep pockets.
Like I said... It is a seven game series. May the best team win.
Johnny, at least wait until Game 2 to jump off the bandwagon! Good grief!
Lost causes are for Democrats. Republicans should side with winners. Go Yankees.
They were going to get A-Rod and get rid of two big salaries-- Nomar and Manny ($34M this year between them) and get some cheap bat to replace the two of them. Next year, the Red Sox will have a much smaller payroll than this year. That won't be true for the Yankees.
What I find weird is that we should be facing Vlad in the ALCS. Boy, did Steinbrenner miss that opportunity.
"Yeah, Ok. You speek for all of America."
Acknowledged.

Hmm, it seems like the Marlins and a bunch of other teams with payrolls much smaller than the Yankees have managed to win the World Series recently. Amazingly the SUX are not among them. How is that possible if payroll is such a huge factor? Face it, the SUX pay ALOT and LOSE. SUX fans are not really getting your money's worth are they?
Go Yanks, America's Team.
For the most part, yes : )
"we had the tying run at the plate"
Of course, he hit a great hit but when he thought it was going to be caught, he slowed down at first base.
How can you explain a PROFESSIONAL not legging out a liner to the wall late in the game when he is the TYEING run!
Not to start a big sports hullabaloo....but I get sick and tired of the deep pockets, money, money, money crying everyone does. The Yankees have the money because they run a great organization. They have the market, merchandise, and an owner who wants to win. The history, and aura happened for a reason-yes NY spends the money but the players play the game! This has been true since the 1920's...plus the Yankees had some sucky years where spnding did not cure the ills (late 1960's-mid 1970's and the 1980's.) It is pure jealousy TO DISS THEM...
Hey I belive the Yankees organization and players represent pure capitalism, respect for the game and its history, respect for their fans...
Conversly the long hair wacky bearded "individuals" in Boston are tiring. They whine, complain, and look unprofessional...they are damn good but the shtick is getting old!
Bottom line...
YANKEES =REPUBLICAN VALUES AND A BUSH WIN!
BOSTON=WHINY NEW ENGLAND VALUES AND A KERRY WIN!
GO YANKEES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
FLAME AWAY FOLKS!
Yankees= Rudy Giuliani
Red Sox= Kerry and Ted Kennedy
The Sox salary is not exactly small. They 'buy' players all the time too. It's the teams in Minnesota, KC, and Cincinnati that need to bitch about 'buying' players, not a team with this many purchased free agents.
Exactly!
LOL. It's just NOT FAIR!! (stomping my feet) that the Yankees work hard and have all that darn money!!
This is an ominous sign for the Yankees, because the end result is likely to change when they go into the 7th inning with "only" a five-run lead.
As long as the Yanks lead going into the eigth, they bring in Mariano, and it's curtains.
One of the reasons the Yankees can afford the hugh payroll is its long tradition of WINNING the American League Pennant and World Series (26 at last count), which builds fan loyalty and brand recognition, which translates to hugh marketing advantages in MLB's biggest market and elsewhere, which generates even more revenunes, which the team then uses to buy even better players to beat the Red Suz and win even more Pennants and World Series titles. And just like a Boston leftist wacko socialist pig, the Red Sux and its fans won't be satisfied until MLB mandates revenue sharing and redistribution of team wealth in effort to produce parity -- and mediocracy -- just like the Peoples Republic of the NFL.
Hey -
I'm an O's fan, so here's to the Cards winning it all. Hey, they're birds, too.
You sound a bit socialist, as though you want the wealth redistributed to give your Bosox a fighting chance. Ha! As if you care about the rest of the league.
Mostly, though, I think you should stop whining about how you don't have a chance because the Yankees are so rich.
My hope, for the record, is that the Sox beat the Yanks, then lose to the Cards. I NEVER want to see a WS ring on Mike Mussina's finger. I say that with all the bitterness an O's fan can muster :)
If you go back and look at the Yankee rosters on their World Series teams of the late 1990s, you'll find that almost every one of their players was: 1) home-grown talent (Williams, Jeter, Rivera, Pettitte, etc.), or 2) aging veterans in the twilight of their careers, many of whom had been cast off from other teams.
So many of the big moments in those championship years came from players whose names many baseball fans would recognize as marginal, AAA-level talent (Leyritz, Sojo, Vizcaino, Mendoza, etc.).
