Mystery Surrounds Kerry's Navy Discharge

An official Navy document on Senator Kerry's campaign Web site listed as Mr. Kerry's "Honorable Discharge from the Reserves" opens a door on a well kept secret about his military service.

The document is a form cover letter in the name of the Carter administration's secretary of the Navy, W. Graham Claytor. It describes Mr. Kerry's discharge as being subsequent to the review of "a board of officers." This in it self is unusual. There is nothing about an ordinary honorable discharge action in the Navy that requires a review by a board of officers.

According to the secretary of the Navy's document, the "authority of reference" this board was using in considering Mr. Kerry's record was "Title 10, U.S. Code Section 1162 and 1163. "This section refers to the grounds for involuntary separation from the service. What was being reviewed, then, was Mr. Kerry's involuntary separation from the service. And it couldn't have been an honorable discharge, or there would have been no point in any review at all. The review was likely held to improve Mr. Kerry's status of discharge from a less than honorable discharge to an honorable discharge.

A Kerry campaign spokesman, David Wade, was asked whether Mr. Kerry had ever been a victim of an attempt to deny him an honorable discharge. There has been no response to that inquiry.

The document is dated February 16, 1978. But Mr. Kerry's military commitment began with his six-year enlistment contract with the Navy on February 18, 1966. His commitment should have terminated in 1972. It is highly unlikely that either the man who at that time was a Vietnam Veterans Against the War leader, John Kerry, requested or the Navy accepted an additional six year reserve commitment. And the Claytor document indicates proceedings to reverse a less than honorable discharge that took place sometime prior to February 1978.

The most routine time for Mr. Kerry's discharge would have been at the end of his six-year obligation, in 1972. But how was it most likely to have come about?

(2) under 1163(b)(1) he had been found to "... [have] been absent without authority for at least three months ...."

This certaintly sounds familiar. It would explain why CBS tried to pin the same exact charge on Bush. And it would explain why Bush answers questions about his service by pointing to his Honorable Discharge.

Thank you for pinging me to this article. This may ruin Kerry's day, but it just made mine. I had to call my husband and tell him about it.

Something smells really rotten about this discharge.

Re: PSYCH OPS

Yep. If the DU has it {and they deleted the thread, I'm told}, then Kerry has it. You gotta know he's looling over his shoulder.

Wonder if kerry mentions his service toninght? He has pointed to it in the other debates....

DD-215's are only issued by the Board of Correction of Naval Records.

there is also no such medal as a Silver Star with a "V". The Silver star is issued for valor, so there is no need for a "V".

There is a Bronze Star with a "V", however. Makes me wonder exactly which medal he was awarded.

He's definitely had his records revised several times, no doubt about it.

No, you don't understand. Kerry requested that the medals be re-issued in the eighties, when Lehman was the Secretary of the Navy. This is the reason that the wording didn't differ substantially from the rewrite that was done in the 70's. It also explains why Lehman knew nothing about the rewrite of Kerry's medals, it was a routine re-issue, per the Carter executive order and was just stamped with the signature of the Sec'ty of the Navy.

The 215 just has corrections, not the original info.

Wasn't Kerry already in office before he was granted an honorable discharge? How did that happen?

So I finally just looked at sKerry's DD214 posted on his web site.

http://www.johnkerry.com/pdf/jkmilservice/DD214.pdf

One thing is absolutely certain: If everything is above board with him, he ought to be able to produce a DD214 with the service data listing his service medals AS WELL AS the type of SEPARATION (honorable or not) he was given, as I can do. The document above is only the first 9 months or so of his military service. There is no other DD214 that I can see there.

I have my final DD214 in the same location as with other super-important documents: birth certificate/ baptism/ marriage cert/ etc. This is one document that you don't just misplace. I even have it in the original dated envelope. sKerry's should have been readily available for production and display on the web site.

Kerry's campaign states that he has revealed everything about his military service, and that it is on his web site. Wrong. He's lying. Surprised?

Wonder if this is why Bush keeps saying he 'is proud to have served and was honorably discharged'?

You can get "other than honorable" discharges and releases without court martial procedures: administrative, general, etc...
