Why have a military when you know the USA will save your butts for free?

One sad consequence of the DISARMING of the English-speaking nations....except America, where it hasn't happened. And I don't think it will because of our vigilance. One good point - we may witness "soft" Euros "hardening-up" as many of their member nations vote on the EU Constitution.

Interesting that the four terrorists arrested in Bufallo, NY 2 years ago where members of Handgun Control, Inc. and registered Dems.

Gee, I didn't know auto-excerpt did four whole paragraphs... just so that the link is low enough to evade first glance. They oughta fix that. I wonder how many non-American publications actually request excerpting...

Whenever I read Mark Steyn, I become convinced that he is the only sane man left in Canada.

In Europe, the soft culture is so advanced--public health care, state pensions, cradle-to-grave welfare, protected jobs from which you can't be fired, 35-hour weeks, six weeks of vacation, lavish unemployment benefits if that all sounds too gruelling--that the citizen is little more than a junkie with the state as a pusher.

The downfall of many nations.

In a democracy, the very fact of socialized health care seduces government away from its prime responsibility--the defence of the realm. In the Canadian cabinet, the Health portfolio is more prestigious than Defence. Think Donald Rumsfeld would regard it as a promotion if he were moved to Health? -Mark Steyn

Even here in the USA the entitlement-load threatens to become the be-all and end-all. Democratic politicians make points on W. not raising taxes in a time of war. Well, if there had been low taxes and a balanced budget, as should be with federal spending not through the roof, he could have raised taxes and/or we could run a temporary small deficit to get us through this.

...free citizens are much more likely to turn back the tide in this war for civilization than nanny-state charges.

Try that in Texas, and the guy will reach into his glove box and blow your head off. In Vermont, too

This is a gross exaggeration. Study the history of the Mardi Gras Riot of 2001 in Seattle. There rampaging thugs beat and robbed dozens of individuals, beating one to death, and sexually molested many others, all while their big tough American neighbors stood by and did nothing. You could probably find similar examples in every state in the union. All the West if infected with the same sickness including the U.S.

Canada cannot even manage to provide a safe sub for its sailors. No wonder Canadian think so little of their military that the saga of H.C.R.S Chicoutimi has become an apt symbol of an impotent Canada.

Mark Steyn is right on. This type of attitude will never change as long as they continue to re-elect socialist governments.

California is more important in the world today, than Canada.

Bigger population, bigger economy.

Exeptions lie ahead, perhaps. For instance, Alberta contains GREATER hydrocarbon reserves, than Saudi Arabia. Oil Shale and Tar Sands.

Being our next door neighbor, good to stay fairly close.
