Should the city continue to celebrate the legacy of Christopher Columbus with a parade?
Yes. It's a state holiday and it gives Italians Americans a chance to celebrate. If you don't like it, you don't have to attend.
No. Christopher Columbus didn't "discover" America. He killed thousands of Native Americans
Shortly before the protesters were arrested, they divided themselves into two groups -- members of the American Indian Movement of Colorado and other American Indians stood behind protesters of other ethnic and racial backgrounds. Organizers said those people wanted to be the first arrested to show the parade wasn't just an issue to American Indians.
Columbus killed thousands of Native Americans?? Really? I thought he 'really' landed on an island somewhere.... were their native Americans in the Bahamas?
I happened to be perusing some stuff by Sir Richard Frances Burton
http://www.fordham.edu/halsall/pwh/burton-te.html
He cites some early works that make the Indians who were here look even less attractive than I had previously thought them.
They were stone-age barbarians, given to torture, slavery, cannibalism, wholesale killing, and all other varieties of depradation.
This business of misrepresenting them as some kind of "noble savage" attuned to "the planet" is about to make me puke.
Once we "Freep" a poll, it is no longer valid.
Columbus song from long ago:
I had a notion to cross the ocean that I'd never crossed before.
I felt for certain that Asia I'd reach;
Now, something tells me I've hit the wrong beach.
No jewels are sold, there; there ain't no gold, there;
Just dirt and disease, galore.
Why did I do it? I really blew it;
When I hit the new world shore.
I am very tired of having U.S. history reconstructed.
Only Italian Americans celebrate Columbus Day?

I understand your misunderstanding on my comment.
Quite the opposite of your assumption, I realize that online polls are meaningless.
...and the Dimbeciles over at DU hit them just as often as we do.
Actually they started the bogusizing of online polls. So to be correct "we" hit them as often as they do.
So the polls get skewed one way, and then the other.
This has been discussed for a week or so.
About that time I started telling people that my opinion was that we should not try to decieve the polls like the Democrats do.
As a matter of fact, the Freep This Poll people missed a poll or two, and the poll people disreguarded it because it was skewed way over to the liberal side. So they caught on.
Then someone had the bright idea (it may have even been me) that we should freep the polls to skew them to the liberal side so they would look bad. Like it was just them skewing the polls.
This is unproductive also IMO.
Freeping is just a way of showing the PC crowd that not everyone thinks like they do and that we're not afraid to show our opinions.
Of course I understand the reasoning there, but in my opinion it is flawed.
One FR person said they had voted 2500 times on a poll!
My suggestion was that there are better things to do with our time, being as online polls are meaningless anyway.
Oops, this is where I came in...
Thanks for your input, I guess I should have saved my post so I could have just c/p'ed here.
Columbus landed on many of the islands in the Caribbean and even "discovered" the mainland.
Native American refers to any native of the Western Hemisphere. Mexicans and Brazilians are Americans too.
BTW, both answers are historically correct. What's their point?
I was just trying to be funny. Wouldn't a native Bahamian take offense to being lumped in with those native Brazilians? kidding,
So am I!
Okay. (laughing hysterically)
I remember some discussion on the subject of Freeping last week, even posted in one of those threads. I agree with your basic premise, but frankly, I think that Freeping is just good fun. I think it reminds all of us here at FR that we are not alone and that we do have the power to influence outcomes. Freeping is good for our morale.
