THE ISRAELI government has ordered Mossad, the foreign intelligence service, to make the hunt for Al-Qaeda terrorists its main priority after last weeks Red Sea attacks that killed at least 33 people, most of them Israeli tourists.
Egyptian officials said yesterday they had detained dozens of bedouin tribesmen on suspicion of supplying the explosives for the blasts at the Taba Hilton and at a bungalow beach camp 35 miles down the coast.
As rescuers pulled more bodies from the wreckage of the hotel, Dan Arditi, Israels counterterrorism chief, urged tourists still in Egypt to come home, warning that the attacks on Thursday dont lessen, even in the slightest, the risk that this will happen again.
The order to Mossad to turn its attention from Palestinian groups to Al-Qaeda was given by Ariel Sharon, the prime minister, after Israeli intelligence sources said the size of the blasts suggested they were the work of Osama Bin Ladens network rather than Palestinian suicide bombers.
Confirmation may be provided by fingerprints taken from bomb fragments and DNA obtained from the remains of the suspected bombers.
Arditi had urged Israelis on September 9 to avoid the area because of indications of an imminent terrorist attack. His warning appeared on the front pages of the countrys main newspapers on the eve of the Jewish new year.
This time Al-Qaeda hit our back yard, said a security source. If we dont focus on them, next time it will be Tel Aviv. After four years of intifada weve succeeded in containing the Palestinian terror, but now were facing a much more ruthless enemy we cant ignore any more.
It is not the first time Al-Qaeda has gone after an Israeli target, or that Sharons government has vowed to take it on. The group claimed responsibility for the car bombing in November 2002 of an Israeli-owned hotel in the Kenyan port of Mombasa that killed 14 people, including three Israelis.
After that attack Sharon summoned Meir Dagan, the head of Mossad, and ordered agents living undercover in Saudi Arabia and Yemen to hunt down those responsible. Almost two years later the perpetrators remain at large a reflection, according to the security source, of the agencys concentration on combating Palestinian operations.
When Mossad was presented with a list of priorities for the current year, Al-Qaeda was not on it. Its main efforts were instead to be directed at Irans nuclear ambitions and the activities of Palestinian terrorist groups in Lebanon and Syria.
Israeli intelligence sources said they believed the Taba attack had been masterminded by Ayman al-Zawahiri, the Egyptian doctor regarded as Bin Ladens deputy. In a statement broadcast this month on the Al-Jazeera satellite television channel, al-Zawahiri threatened to focus Al-Qaedas efforts more intensely on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
Nothing is known about how Mossad will carry out its mission, especially against al-Zawahiri, who is believed to be in hiding near the border of Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Intelligence sources said this weekend the organisation which has no more than 150 agents operating all over the world would not try to compete with Americas CIA.
It would instead focus on Turkey and Thailand. Well co-ordinate with the local security services, but our main aim will be to protect Israeli tourists in these two locations, said one intelligence source.
The agency would then work in a more systematic way, by listing top Al-Qaeda activists and trying to kill them in the same way they have done over the past 40 years in operations against various terrorist groups. To hit an Al-Qaeda leader either in Saudi Arabia, Europe, or even Tehran is less difficult than to act in Damascus, said one intelligence source. Its all a matter of priorities.
Red
An intelligence agency with some balls. The CIA could take some lessons from them. Bush/Cheney 2004
They should have been a "Top Target" on 9/12/01!!
??? There is a Star of David on Admiral Boorda's headstone. What was he supposed to have done wrong? (or right, since he worked for BJ Clinton)
Nothing ever is, often even by the highest levels of Israeli government, and they can be loose cannons sometimes for that reason. But they're plenty effective, and should they choose to accept this mission (not a given, since their priorities aren't always the same as the Israeli government's), al-Qaeda is toast.
The last three threads I've read were originated from you. All were excellent.
The CIA should be cleaned out in the same fashion that the State Department needs cleaning. All governmental employees should take an oath to the Constitution and be fired and prosecuted when they dishonor the same.
That's what I'M talkin' about! To quote my favorite presidential candidate, "You can run, but you can't hide."
Uh, I believe that would be the Camorra. I think cremora refers to an undertaker, or something you put into coffee.
Al Qaeda never really paid attention to Israel until after 9-11.
Their main foe was the US.
They now go after Israel to garner more sympathy in the (Arab) world, because everyone hates Israel.
'Never screw with the Mossad. I heard that when Admiral Borda was found slumped over in his backyard. Nothing here. Move on'
Please explain your remark in detail?
If Al-Qaeda wasn't scard enough by the Americans, it better be now..."Almost" makes you feel sorry for 'em...(not)
Israel presenting Bin Laden's head on the body of a pig at Ground Zero would make an excellent gift to the American people for Halloween. Looks like that is in the works.
"Good news. But what took them so long?"
Israel does not have a large reserve of manpower after all--it is a tiny nation.
In any case, they have had other work to do while we have had ours.
Nevertheless, this has got to ruin Al Zawahiri's day.
They never had the shock and focus of a 9/11. to them it is a slo-mo 9/11 every day, but directed from across the "Green Line". This is the first major attack against them by this bunch, and--as with the Munich '72 killers, in Bush's words--"You can run but you cannot hide". The Mossad will get you.
Let's see, this morning it was the SAS joining the fray avenging the Brit beheading, last month the former KGB apparatus was mustered to avenge Beslan and now Mossad...that oughta make Al Queda terrorists No.1 on the accelerated endangered species list...
OOO Al Quida done went and done it now. Day done pissed off dem jews. ;-) heehee
Now add to the mix already fighting Al-Qaeda with the U.S. -- the intel of the Mossad and beefed-up Putin squads. Israel and Russia will not be setting up any Kerry bilateral summits to warn suicide bombers about the effects of dying.
They didn't just find them, but, they hunted them down one by one and expunged them from the earth. All it takes are brass balls and a plan. Maybe we can learn from this little country what it takes to really fight terrorists before its too late for us all.
