NEWSWEEK POLL: BUSH LEAD GONE
Sat Oct 02 2004 16:42:32 ET

New York-Sixty-one percent of Americans who watched the first presidential debate on September 30 say Sen. John Kerry won; 19 percent say President George W. Bush won and 16 percent say they tied, according to the latest Newsweek Poll which was conducted after the debate ended. Fifty-six percent say Kerry did better than they expected; 11 percent say so for Bush. Thirty-eight percent say Bush did worse than expected;  3 percent say so for Kerry, the poll shows.

The debate erased the lead the Bush/Cheney ticket has held over Kerry/Edwards in the Newsweek Poll since the Republican convention. In a three-way trial heat including Ralph Nader/Peter Camejo, among registered voters Kerry/Edwards leads Bush/Cheney 47 percent v. 45 percent with 2 percent for Nader/Camejo. In a two-way heat, Kerry/Edwards leads 49 percent v. 46 percent for Bush/Cheney, the poll shows.

A 62-percent majority of viewers says Kerry seemed more confident and self-assured (26% say so for Bush) and 51 percent say Kerry had better command of issues and facts (37% for Bush). Forty-seven percent say Kerry seemed more personally likeable (41 % for Bush) and 49 percent say Kerry came closer to reflecting their own views on most foreign policy issues (43% for Bush). The two were nearly even on several other points, including who came across as a strong leader (47% Kerry, 44% Bush) and who had a better plan for dealing with the situation in Iraq (45% for both). Forty percent of viewers thought Kerry was too wordy and 57 percent thought Bush was too repetitive.

Fifty-seven percent of all poll respondents say they are dissatisfied with the way things are going in the United States at this time. Bush's job approval rating dropped two points from the Sept. 9-10 Newsweek Poll to 46 percent-a 6-point drop since the poll taken during and after the Republican convention. Forty-eight percent of registered voters polled say they would not like to see Bush re-elected but almost as many (46%) say they would.

Seems to me the Repubs have been
flat footed for the last year. I
don't blame Bush, but rather his
handlers. For a year the Dems
have bashed Bush continually with
no response from the RNC or
campaign. Now many of those
accusations have become believable
to the sheeple. Not prepping the
Pres properly for this debate will
go down as one of the biggest
campaign mistakes in history. Hard
for me to give any more money
unless they begin to wake up. JMO.

Forty-seven percent say Kerry seemed more personally likeable (41 % for Bush) This has me doubting the reliability of this whole poll.

That's an excellent observation.

Looks like they "corrected" for party affiliation. They weighted the published results according to some prediction about party turnout. Rerun your numbers weighted for the party affiliation reported to exit polls in the 2000 election and I bet you get the numbers published by Newsweek.

My hope is that this will serve as a wake up call for President Bush. I was surprised that Bush didn't hit more forcefully on Kerry's former positions on the war, particularly the comments he made during the race with Dean. Sean Hannity read that speech word for word the other day - and it was a superb example of flip flopping that Bush could have used to knock the wind out of Kerry's "sometimes for, sometimes against" position on the war.

I kinda got offended. I threw out 32 years if being a democrat. And all my past hertiage has been one of dems. I am the first that has done it. I got my hubby, one of my sons and 3 of my daughters to switch parties as well.

Good for you! We have something in common. While not one as long as you, I registered as a democrat at 18 and voted for Carter in '76 . My college roommate was in love with Carter and I just listened to everything she said. Looking back, I was a dope.

But it get's better...I voted for Carter in '80 over Reagan. I was devastated when Carter lost. I was still a dope. After four years of Ronald Reagan, I changed parties and PROUDLY voted for him in '84. I haven't looked back. :)

I have stopped bashing "democrats" in general because I know some conservative ones who share many of the same values...( I even registered one to vote at our registration drive at church last week. I wanted to say, "don't you know where your party is heading?) It's the "liberals" that are destroying this country and they have taken over the democratic party and will destroy it. Better to get off the ship before it totally sinks.

I agree completely. It appears that the Bush campaign thought the election was over and Bush had won. They did not do their homework, AND IT SHOWED!

If we lose, it will be their own fault! We had it and ACTUALLY HANDED IT OVER. However, it seems rather shallow to base one's vote on a debate.

Kerry did seem to have more confidence and a better command. W has not looked, or done well, in any "staged" situation for quite some time. His milieu is mixing it up with the regular folks and getting down with them. But, I am angry at Karen Hughes, Carl Rove, Andy Card, and all those who are supposed to know what they are doing!

As long as the media is in Kerrys camp we will see numbers like this. Ask the DNC and Newsweek what the result of their internals were, and the story would be quite different. Bush will win.

I'm glad that the average voter is likely to see Kerry for what he is, at least partially. But if those people shrug their shoulders and laugh off the campaign ("amiable lightweight vs. clever jerk") while another handful of idiots decides to march to the polls and vote for a "presidential looking" Kerry, the advantage is Kerry's. Democrats wouldn't such a-holes if they didn't profit from it most of the time.

I swear, it's so weird that on one of these threads these people come out of the woodwork. I'm on FR constantly and have been for the last several years. THESE PEOPLE ARE NOT REGULAR POSTERS! It's hard to believe someone could be a 2-3 year sleeper, but I'm convinced.
